With several big name Junior A players left unprotected by their Senior affiliates, Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) held its 2014 Entry Draft on Sunday from the Iroquois Park Sports Centre in Whitby, Ontario and it was no surprise that Orangeville Northmen alumni Rob Hellyer was selected first overall by the Oakville Rock. Hellyer is currently a member of the National Lacrosse League’s (NLL) Toronto Rock where he has six goals, three assists in their first three games. Last season with the Northmen he had 87 points (38 goals, 49 assists) in 20 regular season games followed by 15 post season points (4g, 11a) in Orangeville’s five-game first round loss to the Whitby Warriors.
The Warriors went on to win the Minto Cup which was largely in part to the stellar play of goaltender Alex Buque who was named the 2013 Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Goalie of the Year. Buque was the first goalie to be selected in Sunday’s draft as he went in the first round, seventh overall, to the Brampton Excelsiors.
