Bayhawks Looking to Build Lacrosse Only Stadium

We’ve heard the rumors for years of the Chesapeake Bayhawks building a lacrosse centric stadium. A story in the Washington Examiner yesterday took a look at the Hawks deciding the move their 22,000 seat proposal down to 13,000-14,000 seats.

The proposed complex would be in Bowie and include ten other fields for youth and other leagues and would be just south of Baltimore Orioles’ affiliate Bowie Bay Sox stadium.

The Maryland Stadium Authority did a study and determined that an arena around 14,000 would be more appropriate for the Bayhawks, who draw around 9,500 fans a game, good for third best in the league.

Chesapeake is formerly known as the Baltimore and Washington Bayhawks and they have played in six arenas since 2001. They are the reigning MLL champions after defeating Denver in Boston this season for the championship. From the story in the Examiner:

“If it’s a complex that the Bayhawks are interested in leasing, they would end up perhaps paying a share of that,” said Alvin McNeal, acting deputy director at the park and planning commission. “Depending on how we determine the cost allocation, the state may also pay a share of that.”
