FIL Day Two: Israel Impresses, Finland Pitches Shutout

Yesterday in the FIL tournament teams made their first marks of the tournament including impressive showings from Israel, Finland and the Iroquois.

Netherlands 19 China 4

Scott Janssen led Netherlands with six goals to lead the Dutch past first year China. In their first ever game internationally China only could put up four goals. Tyler Buchan scored four of them.

Switzerland 10 Latvia 5

Switzerland opened up their division with a good showing over Latvia. Phillip Sponagel scored four times while for Latvia Christopher Zarins scored three.

Wales 10 Russia 2

Russia played poorly in their FIL debut as they were blown out by Wales. Paul Simpson, David Howie, and Rhondi Stanford each had two goals.

Italy 14 Norway 9

This was a slight upset with Italy taking it from Norway. Norway did not get going until the fourth quarter but it was too late. Thomas Filbotte scored four times while John St. John, Jordan Vettoretti and Steven Whitford had three each.

Bermuda 9 France 7

Drew Jenkins scored three times for the Bermudans to lead them past France. The French had three goals from Kevin Bertrand.

Hong Kong 13 Austria 12

This was the first game to go to overtime, and in fact it went to double overtime. Klaus Hauer and Alex Ball had three each for Austria while Matthew Silverio had five for Hong Kong. Wai Kwan Wong made eleven saves while allowing eleven.

Scotland 24 Thailand 3

This was a blowout from the start with Scotland scoring six goals to open the game. Jordan McBride led the team with seven goals while Kyle Buchanan had three.

Israel 19 Sweden 4

The stunner of the day came with the first year Israel destroying the tenth ranked Sweden. Ari Sussman had five goals with three from Matthew Cherry. They started the game with a 8-0 lead.

Finland 19 Colombia 0

Finland just owned Colombia and was in a completely different weight class. This was the only shutout of the first games. Jarno Aaltonen had seven goals while Colombia only got off two shots.

Slovakia 15 Korea 6

The Slovaks took a commanding 6-0 lead and never looked back. Noah Hoselton scored three times for Slovakia and David Washo picked up two.

Czech Republic 12 Turkey 3

The Czechs were dominant in this contest, shutting out Turkey at the half. Dominik Pesek and Chet Koneczny had three goals each and Radek Skala added two.

Mexico 14 Spain 10

This was a tight contest throughout with Mexico taking it. Mike Vila had four goals and Joe Vila added three along with Axkana Patraca.

Poland 23 Costa Rica 1

If not for Finland, Poland would have had the most dominant day. They held Costa Rica scoreless until the fourth quarter when James Collins scored. Jan Rydzak scored six times while Wojciech Filipek buried five.

New Zealand 19 Argentina 2

Andrew Clayton led New Zealand with five goals while John Clayton scored four. Argentina’s two goals came from Octavio Bernabo and and Zach Kahn.

Germany 12 Belguim 4

Germany is a terrific team but it was surprising to see Belguim beaten this badly.  Simon Giourmetakis scored twice while Belguim got off just eight shots.

Ireland 17 Ugunda 1

This game was shortened due to rain. Casiro Onen scored the first goal ever by an African player in the loss for Ugunda. Tim Riley scored three times for Ireland.

Australia 14 Japan 13

This game went three overtimes before Australia finally won. Nigel Morton scored three times while Andrew Lay and Tetsuya Ozawa scored twice for Japan.

Iroquois 15 England 4

Iroquois dominated in their return to the FIL tournament as they held England to just four goals. Jerome and Lyle Thompson had three goals each. Jeremy Thompson and Randy Staats added two.
