Winter Blast a holiday tradition

December 27, 2017

The seventh annual Winter Blast Tournament hosted by the Calgary Mountaineers Junior A Lacrosse Club took place in Calgary on December 22nd. Thirty-seven teams in six divisions competed in the unique one-day tournament, all for a chance to win the grand prize – a giant bag of candy. The idea for Winter Blast was born in 2011 from then Mountie coaches Rick Windle and Duane Bratt, whose goal was to…

OLA Jr. A: Excelsiors not fooled by Lakers’ magical run

July 4, 2017

What could have been a magical, though improbable run by the Peterborough Jr. A Lakers probably came to an end on Monday night as they went down 12-11 to the Brampton Excelsiors at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. With just 12 seconds to go and down by just one, some sleight-of-hand by the Lakers Riley Morgan gave the home team a needed face-off win for the last possession of the game….

Adanacs Bring Minto Cup West With Second Title in Six Years

September 3, 2016

For the first time since 2005, both of Canada’s most prized lacrosse trophies reside on the west coast. The Coquitlam Adanacs won their first Minto Cup since 2010, but it took an extra 10 minutes to put away a resilient Orangeville Northmen in five games. A monstrous Christian Del Bianco save with minutes on the clock preserved a 6-5 victory for the A’s, after trade acquisition Dereck Downs scored at…

Minto Cup: Adanacs Continue Dominance Against Calgary

August 22, 2016

If you wanted to see just how dominant the Coquitlam Adanacs can be at this Minto Cup, a shellacking of Alberta champion Calgary Mountaineers should give you a good idea. Calgary failed to score in the final 23:52 of regulation and managed to put just three goals past Coquitlam’s Christian Del Bianco overall as the A’s pushed their perfect record to 2-0 with a 10-3 win. Depending on the outcome…

August 8, 2016

The Coquitlam Adanacs were a goal away from being shutout of the opening two games of the BCJALL Finals, despite going undefeated in 25 straight regular season and playoff games. It took overtime goals from Reid Bowering and Dereck Downs for the A’s to tie their best-of-three series against the Delta Islanders 1-1, setting up a pivotal third and deciding game. That goes in Coquitlam on Tuesday with a 7:30…

Observations on RMLL Jr. B Tier II Play

June 27, 2016

I attended my first Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League game ever on June 19, to see the Lethbridge Barracudas take on the Red Deer Renegades. The first-place ‘Cudas handily beat the Renegades 14-7 in a game where both goaltenders played well and there was some rough stuff, as I think can be expected when you’ve got a bunch of teen boys banging into each other. Having never been to a Tier…

Around the WCSLA: June 3

June 3, 2016

The WCSLA regular season is fully underway and already two teams are trying to pull ahead of the pack. Even though the Langley Warriors suffered their first loss of the season to the Nanaimo Timbermen on the weekend, Langley and the Ladner Pioneers sit at the top of the WCSLA standings. Although Ladner has only played five games, they have one of the best goal differentials in the league (28…

MSL Draft Recap: Cobourg Kodiaks

January 29, 2016

After a very disappointing season, the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks(now based in Cobourg) had an opportunity to select players in the draft that are able to make an immediate impact and it looks like general manager Steve Dietrich did exactly that.

With the first pick overall, the Kodiaks selected 2015 OLA Jr.A breakout player John St. John. The Toronto Beaches product netted an impressive 92 points in 2015, which helped him get…
