Saturday, June 25 was a big day in Durham Region – declared by the mayor of Whitby to be “Lacrosse Day in Durham.” The grassroots organization Lacrosse in Motion, which is made up of eleven different lacrosse clubs in the region, put together what they hope will be an annual event featuring the best Durham has to offer in lacrosse. For those unfamiliar with Ontario geography, Durham is the area…

Excelsiors Clean House Ahead of Trade Deadline

Brampton
July 5, 2016

The MSL’s Brampton Excelsiors appear to have given up on the 2016 season. The Excels currently sit in last place in the six team league, one point back of Cobourg for fifth, but the divide between the top four and the bottom two is insurmountable with half the season still left to play. Peterborough, Brooklin, Six Nations, and Oakville are all strong teams with double digits in points and strong…

Around the WCSLA: North Shore’s Run Led by Bold

DSC_9972
June 29, 2016

North Shore’s improbable playoff push was given another boost on the weekend, after the Indians came up with two big wins over the Langley Warriors and Coquitlam Adanacs. On the tails of signing former NLL Goalie of the Year Aaron Bold to backstop them to potential provincial glory, Shore is now 4-7 and just a game back of Victoria and Coquitlam in the WCSLA standings. They squeaked out a 10-9…

Observations on RMLL Jr. B Tier II Play

Cudas v Renegades 19-Jun-2016
June 27, 2016

I attended my first Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League game ever on June 19, to see the Lethbridge Barracudas take on the Red Deer Renegades. The first-place ‘Cudas handily beat the Renegades 14-7 in a game where both goaltenders played well and there was some rough stuff, as I think can be expected when you’ve got a bunch of teen boys banging into each other. Having never been to a Tier…

Kodiaks Suffer Loss At Hands of Chiefs

DSCN6316
June 27, 2016

The Cobourg Kodiaks were presented a gift by the Six Nations Chiefs on Sunday. Unfortunately, the Kodiaks couldn’t capitalize on the fact that the Chiefs showed up to the Cobourg Community Centre with only 14 runners, none of whom were named Jamieson, Staats, Smith, or Benesch. They even put their backup Warren Hill in goal but the Kodiaks suffered a nearly 40 minute power outage on their home floor as…

Major Series Lacrosse: Rock on a Roll

DSCN6009
June 23, 2016

Week 3 of the MSL season saw a logjam at the top of the standings between four teams, with two teams far on the outside looking in. The Oakville Rock are on a hot streak, winners of two games this week, 13-5 over Brooklin and 7-5 over Brampton. Stephan Leblanc had nine points and Rob Hellyer seven. The pair are heating up at just the right time and Nick Rose…

Lakers Knock Off Kodiaks Twice

DSCN5937
June 20, 2016

It didn’t take long for the Cobourg Kodiaks to see the Peterborough Lakers as their arch-rivals. The two MSL teams played each other this weekend for the first time since the Kodiaks move from KW. The teams combined for 163 penalty minutes in two games. It wasn’t quite WLA levels of stupidity (nobody fought off the floor), but each game had moments as the teams got used to each other….

Around the WLA: Timbermen More Confident, Burrards Get Talent Boost

WLA_2012_07_19-2826
June 18, 2016

The WLA season is fully underway and while there have been some surprises, some controversy and some bad optics, the product on the floor has looked good so far through the season. A lot of that can be attributed to the league’s seven teams getting stronger as a whole. There isn’t a team that looks terribly out of place like there may have been in year’s past. Although the MLL…

1. Ladner Pioneers (LW – 1) – 7-1-0 Last Week: W vs. Langley, 8-7 (OT); L @ North Shore, 14-5 This Week: Saturday, June 18 vs. Victoria; Sunday, June 19 vs. Nanaimo Despite a big overtime win over the Langley Warriors early in the week, the Pioneers’ undefeated season came to an abrupt halt against a North Shore team buoyed by some recent free-agent signings. MSL Power Rankings: Redmen Get Poulin Back, Stay at Top

Redmen
June 15, 2016

1. Brooklin Redmen Brooklin got a boost this week with the return of #1 goaltender Mike Poulin, in addition to several NLL stars fresh from the championship final in Mark Matthews, Curtis Knight, John Lafontaine, Steve Priolo, Mitch Wilde, Adrian Sorichetti, and Kevin Brownell. Despite the added strength and experience, they still only beat the Cobourg Kodiaks 8-6. The Kodiaks transition game killed the Redmen, who allowed three shorthanded goals…
