MLL At the Break: Cannons Have an Opportunity

It has been just over two months since the Major League Lacrosse season began and the Boston Cannons are currently sitting in fourth place behind the Outlaws, Rattlers, and Lizards. Despite being in a position where the postseason is a possibility, the road to the fourth seed has not necessarily been the easiest one.

In fact, inconsistency has been the story of Boston’s season.

For the Cannons, things started off on a positive note. After a terrible 2013-2014 season, the team was energized, hoping to notch a great win in their season opener, both for themselves and their fans. In the matinee, the Cannons were able to pull off a solid win over the Bayhawks, 15-9. The high from this win, however, would be short lived,

The following week, the Cannons traveled to Rochester to take on the Rattlers. It was a hard fight, but ultimately Rochester was able to steal an 8-7, putting Boston at 1-1 early in the season.

The month of May was a tough one for the Cannons, who were only able to earn one win. The Cannons, led by All-Star and lacrosse branding king Paul Rabil, were ultimately unable to energize themselves beyond a 1-3 record during that month. With May showers just about to end, it was the team’s hope that June would be summertime success.

Leading up to the July break, the Cannons did remain competitive earning a 3-2 record, winning games against the Outlaws and the Machine, who they defeated twice in just a 15-day period. Despite the positive record, the Cannons were once again exposed for their inconsistencies, falling to both the Hounds and Bayhawks; two teams they had defeated in impressive fashion earlier in the season.

MLL play begins once again on July 19, and for the Cannons, things will only get tougher from here. Two of their final four games of the season are against the top teams in MLL, including the Lizards and the Rattlers. The other two games will be no easier feat either. Both games will be played against the Launch, who currently sit just one spot behind Boston in the standings—tied with two other teams; the Hounds and the Machine.

This time last year, Boston was preparing for their abysmal season to end. Now, they are in position to make a post-season appearance, but will have to play aggressively until the final whistle blows if they hope to earn their spot.

Their next game is Saturday, July 19 at 6 pm, when they take on the Lizards at Harvard Stadium.
