Princeton Edges Hopkins in OT

The Princeton Tigers upset the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays, 15-14, in overtime at Homewood Field. Princeton came off the bus and took the first quarter by storm, scoring the first seven goals of the game. The Tigers are 3-0 with the win, while the Jays fall to 2-3.

Princeton can out on first and put the pressure on the Jays to try to catch up. The Tigers kept winning possession after each goal en route to a first quarter lead of 7-0. During that stretch, Hopkins was only able to rattle off one shot. Kip Orban and Mike McDonald were the only players to score more than once in that stretch.

Hopkins would close the quarter with two goals, both assisted the John Crawley. The first from Holden Cattoni and the second from attackman Ryan Brown. The quarter would end with the Tigers leading 7-2 on the home team.

Hopkins would take control of the second quarter and score the next four goals to bring the game to a one-goal marge. Man-up opportunities allowed the Jays to come back in the contest. After Cattoni made the score 7-3, Pat Frazer would have a natural hat trick to get the Blue Jays within one.

Gavin McBride added a goal to break the drought for the Tigers, increasing their lead to two. Attackman Ryan Amber would get Princeton up three with his goal following. Cattoni for the Jays and Orbin for the Tigers would set the halftime score at 10-7 in favor of Princeton.

The Blue Jays would come out of the locker room and score the next three goals to tie the game for the first time. Joel Tinney scored his first of the game, Wells Stanwick scored, and Brown scored to tie the game. The quarter closed with Princeton reclaiming the lead at 11-10 with a goal from Ryan Ambler.

The fourth quarter would be furious between the two sides with Hopkins taking the edge for the start of the quarter. Princeton would score first, but Hopkins would answer with the next four. Freshman Pat Frazer scored his fourth goal of the game, all on extra man opportunities, to get the Jays within one.

Crawley, Brown, and Tinney would score the next three to take a lead of 14-12. The first lead of the game for Hopkins came with 9:16 left in the game. Princeton would score the next two in regulation to lead the game into overtime. The last came with just seven seconds left in regulation. Senior attackman Mike McDonald found Ryan Ambler to tie the game at 14.

The Blue Jays were whistled for two fouls in overtime, which would lead to the game winner. During the two-man advantage, senior goalie Eric Schneider came up with a huge save. On the ensuing attempt to clear, the Jays turned the ball over. Now with the single man advantage, the Tiger capitalized when Riley Thompson found Gavin McBride in close for the winner.

Eric Sanschagrin had 12 saves on the day, while his counterpart Eric Schneider had four for Hopkins. Zach Currier had three assists to go with two goals, along with three others with a total of five points. The Tigers were led by Kip Orbins six-point outing.

The Blue Jays were led by Pat Frazers four extra-man goals, followed by Joel Tinney and Ryan Brown’s three. Wells Stanwick and John Crawley each had three assists in the contest.

Up next for Princeton is the Maryland Terrapins, while Hopkins is taking on their long time rival, the Naval Academy Midshipmen.
