Providence College men’s lacrosse Head Coach Chris Gabrielli announced the newcomers for the 2016 roster and team captains today (Sept. 18). The Friars have added 16 freshmen and one transfer student to the roster for 2016.
The newcomers include, freshman Matt Brisolari (Crofton, Md.), Duncan McGinnis (Menlo-Atherton, Calif.), Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y.), Joseph McHale (Bernardsville, N.J.), James Boyce (Matthews, N.C.), Nick Hatzipetrakos (Syossett, N.Y.), Nick Gray (Garden City, N.Y.), Chris Zanelli (Summit, N.J.), Nick Crews (Longmeadow, N.Y.), David Procopio (Syracuse, N.Y.), Tyler Wilks (Alpharetta, Ga.), Patrick Corcoran (Malvern, Pa.), Colin Keating (Ridgewood, N.J.), Alex George (Simsbury, Conn.), Luke Verrochi (Bedford, N.Y.) and Thomas Bianchin (Toronto, Canada), and junior Samuel Rosengarden (Irving, Texas).
Brisolari attended DeMatha Catholic High School, and earned varsity letters in lacrosse and football. In his senior year, Brisolari captained the lacrosse team. He registered a total of 35 goals and 30 assists throughout his sophomore and junior years. Brisolari also was named First-Team All-Conference and Third-Team All-Gazette as a junior.
McGinnis attended Menlo-Atherton High School from 2010 to 2014, and then attended The Hill Academy during the 2014-15 academic year. McGinnis earned three varsity letters in lacrosse and captained the Menlo-Athleton lacrosse team his junior and senior years. At Menlo-Athleton, he broke the single-game goals record (nine) and was named First-Team All-League in 2013 and 2014. McGinnis also helped his team to two SCVAL League Championship titles in 2012 and 2013.
Kearns attended Chaminade High School. At Chaminade, Kearns earned two varsity letters in lacrosse and two in basketball. During his career, Kearns registered 50 goals and 22 assists and helped his team to back-to-back New York Catholic League Championship titles.
McHale attended Seton Hall Prep, and earned three letters in lacrosse. While at Seton Hall Prep, McHale captained the team during his senior year and recorded 70 goals and 36 assists for 106 career points. McHale helped his team to three-consecutive Essex County Championship titles and two Super Essex Conference Championship titles. His team was ranked 26th in the nation by Laxpower.com and received a No. 4 ranking in the State of New Jersey. McHale also received 2015 First Team All-Super Essex Conference honors, 2015 First-Team All-Fitch Pitt Division honors, 2015 Second-Team All-Non Public, 2015 Second-Team All-New Jersey and was elected for the Gil Gibbs State All-Star Game in 2015.
Boyce attended Providence High School during the 2011-12 academic year and McCallie School for the following three years. Boyce earned four varsity letters in lacrosse and two in football while at the McCallie School, and captained the lacrosse team as a senior. Boyce registered a total of 417 saves over the three years he played at McCallie, with a career-high 26 saves his sophomore year in a game against Severn. Boyce earned three First-Team All-Region honors and First-Team All-State honors, as well as being named a U.S. Lacrosse All-American his junior and senior years. He also was named USA Today Second Team All-USA and Inside Lacrosse Power ranked him as No. 71 on the incoming freshman rankings and the seventh best goaltender in the country. Boyce also helped his team to three Regional Championships, a state championship semifinal and second-place finish and the Tennessee State Championship title.
Hatzipetrakos attended Syosset High School, and earned four varsity letters in lacrosse and three in football. He recorded 77 goals and 66 assists throughout his career at Syosset and captained the team during his senior year. Hatzipetrakos helped his lacrosse team to two County Championship titles and a Long Island Championship. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Hatzipetrakos also earned two Academic All-Conference honors (2012 and 2013), Academic Honorable Mention in 2014 and was a member of the National Honor Society.
Gray attended Chaminade High School. Gray helped his team to two Catholic State Championship titles, one his junior year and one his senior year.
Zanelli attended Summit High School, and earned three letters in lacrosse, three in football and four in hockey. During his senior year at Summit, Zanelli captained the lacrosse, football and hockey teams. He registered a total of 58 goals and 24 assists for 82 career points. He also collected 100 ground balls. Zanelli helped his team to two Group II State Championship titles, two County Championship titles and one Conference Championship.
Crews attended Longmeadow High School, and earned three letters in lacrosse and football. During his senior year at Longmeadow, Crews captained the lacrosse team and received the Best Male Athlete Award. In 2013, he helped his team win the Massachusetts State Championship.
Procopio attended West Genessee High School and earned three letters in lacrosse and four letters in hockey, and served as a captain for each team. At West Genessee, Procopio registered 88 goals and 13 assists for 101 career points. He received the 2015 MVP award, All-Conference honors in 2015 and All-League honors in 2014 and 2015. Procopio also was a member of the National Honor Society.
Wilks attended the McCallie School, and earned four varsity letters in lacrosse. Wilks received two All-State honors and three All-Region honors. During his senior year at McCallie, Wilks recorded 119 points, and was named an All-American. Wilks helped his team to the 2015 State Championship title, while also being named the State Championship MVP. Wilks also holds the Tennessee record in assists.
Corcoran attended Bishop Shanahan High School. Corcoran captained the lacrosse team his senior year and helped his team to three-consecutive Chesmont Championship titles. In 2013, Corcoran was an All-Chesmont honorable mention. In 2014, Corcoran earned Second-Team All-Chesmont honors and First-Team All-Chesmont recognition in 2015.
Keating attended Ridgewood High School. During his senior year at Ridgewood, Keating went 175.292 at the face-off “x” (60%) and registered five goals and five assists. Keating was named Second-Team All-County and Second-Team All-Gibbs Division. In addition, Keating helped his team to three Group 3 State Championship titles.
George attended Simsbury High School. During his senior year, George captained his team and received All-Conference and All-State honors. During his junior year, George also received All-Conference recognition. He helped his team to three Conference Championship titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Verrochi attended Fox Lane High School, and earned two varsity letters in football and four varsity letters in skiing and lacrosse. Verrochi captained the football, skiing and lacrosse teams during his senior years. He also served as captain of the lacrosse team in his junior year. Verrochi also received All-Section honors, twice, and All-League accolades three times.
Bianchin attended Bishop Ryan High School and then attended Trinity Pawling. At Bishop Ryan, Bianchin was named team Offensive MVP his junior year.
Rosengarden is a transfer from Jacksonville University. At Jacksonville, Rosengarden played a total of 25 games, registered one assist and grabbed 72 groundballs. Prior to Jacksonville, Rosengarden attended Dallas Jesuit High School. While at Dallas Jesuit, Rosengarden assisted his team to the State finals all four years and was a member of the National Honor Society.
“We are very pleased to announce the addition of 16 freshman and one transfer student to the Friars’ Lacrosse Family,” Gabrielli said. “Our newcomers are quickly learning the intensity and commitment level necessary to be a Division I student-athlete, and they are certainly up to the task.”
In addition to the announcement of the newcomers, Gabrielli also announced the captains for the 2016 season. Seniors Jarrod Neumann (Springfield, Mass.), Will Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Michael Perettine (Farmingdale, N.Y.) will step into the leadership role.
Neumann has started 28 of the 29 games he has played for the Friars. He has registered one goal, one assist, 47 grounds balls and 32 turnovers. During the 2015 season, Neumann was named to the Pre-Season All-BIG EAST Team, All-BIG EAST First Team and earned NEILA All-New England Second-Team honors.
Mazzone transferred from West Point for the 2014-15 academic year for his first season with the Friars. He played 14 games and finished the year as the leading point-scorer on the team, with 24 goals and 11 assists for 35 points. He also collected 28 groundballs and caused eight turnovers during the season. Mazzone registered three-or-more goals in four games, earning him a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the week of April 13. He had a season-high four goals against Brown.
Perettine also transferred from West Point for the 2014-15 academic year. He appeared in all 14 games for the Friars and finished fourth in the team in points (18), with 16 goals and two assists. Three of his 16 goals came in the April 11 game against Marquette. Perettine also collected 14 groundballs and caused three turnovers during the 2015 season.
“These three individuals represent the program and our ideals well; in that they are tough, disciplined, talented, blue collar and team-first guys,” said Gabrielli. “We demand that all of our student-athletes lead in their own way, but a strong example of the right way to lead will be made clear everyday by Jarrod, Will and Michael.”
