WLA Weekend Recap: Bellies Hold On

This has been a busy weekend in the WLA and here are the results from this weekend’s games.

New Westminster Vs Maple Ridge:

The Maple Ridge Burrards came into this game as one of the hottest teams in the league but the New Westminster Salmonbellies were ready to cool them off.  The Salmon Bellies took control of the game early as they held a 2-1 lead after one period of play. In the second period New Westminster continued to build on their lead as Ilija Gajic, Jordan McBride and Logan Schuss scored consecutively to give the Salmonbellies a 5-2 lead after two periods. The Burrards fought back in the third though with six goals but the Salmonbellies were up to the task as they scored five goals of their own to hold on for the 10-8 victory.

Burnaby Vs Victoria

Burnaby came into this game having just won their first game against the Langley Thunder and now were facing the first place Victoria Shamrocks. The first period was a back and forth affair as Burnaby and Victoria exchanged goals in the first period until Rhys Duch and Jeff Shattler scored consecutively to give Victoria a 4-3 lead after the first period. In the second period the two teams met each other blow for blow as every time one team would score the other was ready with a quick goal in response. After two periods of play Victoria led 9-8. In the third period Burnaby would take control as Shaun Dhaliwal, Scott Jones and Dane Stevens scored consecutively to give Burnaby a 11-9 lead. Victoria would respond with a goal from Rhys Duch to make it 11-10 but Scott Jones would score the insurance goal to make the score 12-10. In the end Burnaby held on for the 12-11 victory their second of the season.

Coquitlam Vs New Westminster

Coquitlam came into this game looking for revenge as they lost 14-6 against New Westminster in their last meeting. Coquitlam got off to a good start as Ryan Johnson scored a pair of goals to give Coquitlam the 2-1 first period lead. Coquitlam and New Westminster exchanged goals to begin the second period before Dane Dobbie scored a pair of goals while Jeff Zywiciki  added a goal to give Coquitlam the lead at the end of two the score was 8- 4 in favor of Coquitlam. In the final frame New Westminster fought back as Keegan Bal, Tom Johnson, and Ilija Gajic scored to bring the game within one. Coquitlam though would hold off the New Westminster comeback and walk away with the 8-7 victory.
