Everyone in lacrosse knows that Major League Lacrosse wants to add a team to Atlanta. After an attendance of 8,000+ at this year’s championship game between Rochester and Denver, it is becoming closer to a reality.
During halftime of the game broadcast commissioner David Gross was interviewed by CBS Sports Network, where he stated that there would be no MLL expansion in 2015. However, he did say that Atlanta is on the radar and will be happening sooner rather than later.
“There’s a lot of interest in having an MLL team in Atlanta,” commissioner David Gross said to the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “Our goal is to field a team there in 2016.”
“We want to put a team in Atlanta,” Gross said. “We’re working with the Atlanta Sports Council and Cobb County to get that done. Right now the most important thing is what the reaction will be when those people walk out the door. If they walk out and say, ‘Wow, that was awesome,’ then that’s the response we’re looking for.”
Currently the league has two teams in the south with Charlotte and Florida. It is presumed that with one team added, another could follow, possibly in Philadelphia or back to Hamilton. If this was the case, with ten teams, they could probably form a southern division with Ohio or Chesapeake in there as well.
