The Chesapeake Bayhawks will face off with the Denver Outlaws after topping the Boston Cannons on Saturday afternoon.
The Cannons got off to a hot start, taking a 5-2 lead after one quarter. Mike Stone scored two goals in the period and they also saw offense from Matt Poskay, Kevin Buchanan and Pat Heim.
In the second quarter, the Bayhawks would get back in it and take a lead. Starting the quarter with a behind the back goal from John Grant Jr, but it would be two goals from Kyle Dixon, including a two pointer, that gave them the lead.
Kyle Sweeney would score a goal in the crease before the end of the second to get the Cannons back within one goal. However, though Stone’s third goal of the night would tie it up, the Bayhawks scored two goals from Ben Rubeor to take a two goal lead late in the third.
One of the biggest stories of the game was the struggles of John Ortolani in the faceoff circle for the Cannons, who were without Chris Eck for the second game in a row.
Rubeor would score his third in a row with eight seconds left in the third to give the Bayhawks a 12-9 lead going into the fourth quarter. He would score another again to lead off the fourth.
Ortolani took a bad penalty with a late, high hit to put the Bayhawks on the power play. Drew Westervelt put another in the net on a shot that went off of Burke to give the Hawks a 14-6 lead.
Kip Turner, meanwhile, was on his game, making all the late saves he needed to. Michael Kimmel put it away with the fifteenth goal with a little more than eight minutes left to play.
Rubeor scored another one to make it 16-9, his sixth goal of the season. It will be the Bayhawks facing off with the Cannons in the Championship tomorrow afternoon.
