The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today that they have acquired midfielder Josh Hawkins from the Charlotte Hounds in exchange for a college and supplemental draft pick in 2016.
“We are thrilled to add a player with Josh’s skills and style of play. He is a very athletic midfielder that plays great defense, and puts pressure on opposing teams by pushing transition and causing scoring opportunities,” said Cannons Head Coach John Tucker.
The Cannons will be giving up a 2nd round collegiate pick and a second round supplemental pick in 2016 in exchange for the dynamic midfielder who brings size, athletic ability, and a great defensive sense. Hawkins will be a great addition to the Cannons as he is a mobile defensive midfielder who also brings a vital offensive presence.
Originally from Amherst, MA, this Massachusetts native is no stranger to the great fan base Boston has, and has continued to live in Amherst and coach at Amherst College. Hawkins attended Amherst High School and Deerfield Academy growing up.
“We are excited to make this trade today. Josh is a great player on the field who will fit in with our team’s style of play. Being a Massachusetts native and very active in the Western Mass lacrosse community is a plus for brand and what we are doing to grow the sport here in New England,” said Cannons Vice President and GM Kevin Barney.
Hawkins graduated from Loyola University in 2013, and was part of the 2012 NCAA Championship Team with current Cannons teammate Scott Ratliff. He had a breakout season in 2014 for Charlotte, playing in all 14 games, scoring 6 goals and adding 2 assists while collecting 32 ground balls.
Boston will head to Florida this Saturday, June 20th to take on the Launch where Hawkins is expected to make his debut for Boston. The Cannons then return home on Sunday June 28th to take on Chesapeake at4:00pm
