The Rochester Knighthawks began their quest for a National Lacrosse League record third consecutive Champion’s Cup with an 8-6 win over the visiting Minnesota Swarm.
This favorable start is in contrast with the Knighthawks’ early season woes of 2013, when Rochester followed their first of back-to-back championships with a 0-3 record to start the year.
The game marked the second time the teams had met on The Blue Cross Arena turf during the month of December, as the Swarm previously squeaked away with a 16-15 victory during preseason play.
Dangerous Dan Dawson led a largely quiet Rochester offense with six points (2g, 4a). Cody Jamieson added three points, while Johnny Powless and Joe Walters chipped in with two points each. Syracuse grad Stephen Keogh was held to just one assist.
After dominating the Swarm in exhibition play with a nine point performance (6g, 3a), Craig Point was scratched from the Rochester lineup for the season opener. Lefty sniper Corey Vitarelli was also a notable absence from the game-sheet.
Transitional player Joel McCready solidified the win for Rochester with five points (2g, 3a), including the game-tying and game-winning goals.
The Knighthawks defense continued it’s momentum from last season, in which the team finished with the lowest goals against average league-wide, by holding the Swarm offense to just six goals. Out of six NLL squads to begin play thus far, Rochester currently holds the lowest GAA on the young season.
Reigning NLL Goaltender of the Year Matt Vinc showcased the talent that earned him such accolades, turning aside 45 of 51 shots faced. Vinc currently leads the league in saves.
Rochester will return to action Saturday, January 11 at The Blue Cross Arena versus the Philadelphia Wings.
