The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, today announced head coach Steve Duffy’s contract extension through the 2013 season. In his first year as head coach, Duffy has led the 2012 Cannons to a 9-5 record and the team’s 10th playoff appearance. The Cannons seek to defend the MLL Championship in front of their home crowd on August 25 & 26 at Harvard Stadium.
“It was an easy decision to offer Coach Duffy a contract extension,” said Cannons General Manager Kevin Barney. “From the day we named him head coach, he has dedicated countless hours towards bringing success to the organization. It was a seamless transition for the team, and he has achieved our first goal by bringing the Cannons to Championship Weekend for the fourth straight year. While the ultimate outcome for 2012 is still to be decided, we are excited to announce that he will be back to lead the team for the 2013 season.”
“Although we are still focused on this year and our team goals for 2012, I’m happy to look toward the future with the Boston Cannons and I’m excited for what’s to come,” said Duffy.
Duffy’s current contract ends on August 31. The signed extension is through August 31, 2013. Details of the contract were not disclosed per the team’s policy.
Prior to being named head coach in the fall, Duffy served as an assistant to Bill Daye for three seasons. A Waltham, MA native, Duffy is well known in the local community for his involvement in the sport. Duffy is recognized in the Waltham High School Hall of Fame after coaching the varsity program for 18 years. While at the helm of the varsity team, Duffy also founded the Waltham Youth Lacrosse Program in 1994 to further foster the sport’s development in his hometown. He remains a board member for the Patriot Youth Lacrosse League.
“In addition to leading the team, Coach Duffy has been a tremendous asset off the field as we continue to grow our fan base and promote the game of lacrosse throughout New England,” continued Barney. “Coach Duffy took over as the director of the Cannons Lacrosse Academy in six locations this summer, and attends charity events and appearances throughout the year.”
