Most reasonable lacrosse fans had the Chesapeake Bayhawks defeating the Boston Cannons last night. But this is why lacrosse is so great. The 0-3 Cannons defeated the 3-0 defending champion Bayhawks 15-14 in overtime last night, shocking the lacrosse world.
The Cannons are without their starting goaltender and they’ve struggled to score timely goals all season. Meanwhile, the Bayhawks have a team goals against average just above four and have not lost yet all season. Seemed easy to predict a Bayhawks win, right?
Ryan Boyle would score the overtime goal after last week he broke the all time MLL career points record. The Cannons led 4-3 after the first quarter and at the half they held an 8-7 lead.
Paul Rabil scored a two pointer in the third quarter to keep it tied because Ben Rubeor added a two pointer of his own while the Bayhawks scored five times. It was 12-12 after three.
Chesapeake scored two goals late to take the lead, but Rabil scored with one minute left to tie it, and the game headed into overtime. Boyle would score the OT goal with one second left on the shotclock.
One of the positives in this game for the Cannons were the faceoffs. They won 20 out of 30, against Adam Rand who had been red hot for Chesapeake. The Bayhawks had 30 shots while the Cannons nearly matched that with 28.
Rabil led the Cannons with seven points while Boyle picked up five and Mike Stone had four. John Grant Jr had six points and Steven Brooks added five.
