The Six Nations Chiefs improved to 3-1 after defeating the Peterborough Lakers (2-2) by a score of 12-9 on Sunday afternoon at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
The Chiefs had a 7-3 lead halfway through the second period, but after a string of penalties the Lakers took advantage and scored four straight goals to tie the game. Six Nations then scored three straight to lead 10-7 early in the third but Peterborough closed the gap to 10-9 with 10 minutes to go in the game. Goals by Alex Hill at 13:46 and Sid Smith at 15:43 secured the victory with a 12-9 win.
Craig Point led the way for the Chiefs scoring seven points (1G, 6A) while Cody Jamieson scored two goals and four assists for six points. Other scorers for the Chiefs were Roger Vyse (2G, 3A), Kasey Biernes (2G, 1A), Colin Doyle (1G, 2A), Alex Hill (1G, 1A), Marty Hill (1G), Smith (1G), David Brock (1G), Mike McNamara (1A) and Rodd Squire Jr. (1A).
Evan Kirk (2-0) picked up the win in net with 30 saves.
Six Nations hosts Brampton (0-3) on Sunday June 9th at 2 pm in their next regular season game.
The Lakers were led by Shawn Evans who added seven assists in the loss. Josh Gillam scored two goals and four assists alongside Cory Vitarelli who tallied two goals and three assists. Laker’s Scott Evans (3G), Mark Steenhuis (2G), Matt Crough (1A), Brad Self (1A) and Aaron Grayson (1A) rounded out the scoring for Peterborough.
Tyler Carlson took the loss in net making 26 saves.
Peterborough will look to avenge their May 26th loss to Brooklin when they host the Redmen (3-0) at the Memorial Centre on Thursday at 8 pm. The Lakers lost 15-9 to Brooklin in their last meeting which saw both teams combine for a total of 89 penalty minutes.
The Lakers defense will be need to shut down the tandem of Gavin Prout and Shawn Williams if they hope to improve to 3-2. Brooklin will be keeping a close eye on brothers Shawn and Scott Evans who have a combined 40 points in four games for the Lakers this season.
