CLax Recap: Cyclops Drawing Attention, Turfdogs Falling Hard

The newest squad to the Canadian Lacrosse League (CLax), the SouthWest Cyclops (2-2), were victorious in Week 4 action defeating the Durham Turfdogs (1-4) by a score of 18-14.

After Jordan Robertson started the scoring, giving Durham the lead less than 30 seconds into the game, a largely back-and-forth opening quarter would see the Turfdogs head into the second frame with a 5-3 lead.

The Cyclops would dominate the second quarter, going on a 8-0 scoring run that would go unanswered until Durham’s Derek Hopcroft (2 G, 2 A) found the back of the cage with just four seconds remaining in the half.

Jimmy Purves was outstanding for SouthWest in the win. The 2013 NLL champion and former Rochester Knighthawk had six points against the Turfdogs, finding the back of the cage five times while adding a lone helper. The Sarnia, ON native’s five goals all proved timely. After opening the scoring for Southwest, Purves netted a pair during the Cyclops’ second quarter offensive outburst while adding two more in the closing frame.

Brampton, ON native Ryan Campbell (2 G, 4 A) also had six points for the Cyclops. Week 3 Rookie of the Week Mike Burke mirrored his statistical output that earned him such honors (3 G, 2 A). The Edmonton Rush prospect leads SouthWest statistically with 21 points.

Durham rookie Dylan Goodard led his team offensively in the loss, scoring once while dishing out five helpers for six points. The former Clarington Green Gael leads Durham in scoring with 18 points. Brad “Scott” Levick (4 G, 1 A) and Jordan Robertson (3 G, 2 A) were also impressive for the Turfdogs, finishing with five points each.

The Cyclops will host the struggling Barrie Blizzard (0-4) at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena Saturday, March 1 at 8 pm, while the Turfdogs will look to take down the first place Oshweken Demons (4-0) in a 2 pm game at the GM Centre.
