Captain Will Miss Entire 2015 Season
Toronto, ON – Toronto Rock captain Colin Doyle underwent successful shoulder surgery to repair his torn rotator cuff last Thursday in Georgetown, Ontario. The 17-year NLL veteran will miss the 2015 season while he recovers from the injury.
“The surgery went really well,” remarked Doyle about the procedure that was performed by team doctor Dr. Vikram Venkateswaran. “There was more work than anticipated, but everything went as well as could be expected.”
The Toronto Rock captain is expected to miss the entire 2015 season, however Doyle noted that the rehab plan is already in full swing.
“The first day after surgery is the first day towards getting back,” said Doyle. “I’m a little sore but the game plan to getting healthy is being laid out and I’m going to be extremely dedicated towards getting back to form.”
The injury occurred in Game 4 of the Ontario Lacrosse Association’s Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) playoffs against the Brooklin Redmen while Doyle was playing for the back-to-back Mann Cup Champion Six Nations Chiefs. “I dove for a loose ball, landed on my elbow and drove my shoulder up.”
The good news is that there was no indication of a previous injury and the torn rotator cuff was a result of the trauma to his shoulder suffered in the summer incident.
Doyle said rehab alternatives to surgery were discussed but surgery was the best path to follow considering the possible risks of further injury. The degree of pain he was in also had some influence on the decision to have surgery.
“At times laying in bed was a chore,” explained Doyle of the pain. “It was unbearable sometimes and playing in the summer was difficult. I just wanted to have the surgery, get it done and not risk the possibility of further injury.”
The all-time leader in goals, assists and points among all Rock players says he won’t be a stranger this season and he will be around.
“I won’t be around much during training camp as I’ll be rehabbing on my own in the beginning,” said Doyle. “I will be at the games, working out at the gym with Sean Holmes (Rock Strength Coach) and working with Dave Murray (Rock Head Trainer).”
While Doyle will be focused on the long road to recovery, he will also be taking advantage of some of the additional personal time he will have on his hands.
“I am going to do some more teaching,” explained Doyle who has taught part-time for the last several years. “I am taking a few courses to upgrade my teaching qualifications and I will be spending more time with my family.”
