The Canadian Lacrosse League Clax kicked off on Saturday with a championship rematch between the Iroquois Ironmen and the Oshweken Demons. The game began with former Ironmen Wayne Vanevery scoring a natural hat trick for his new team in order to give the demons a 3-0 lead. Oshweken would stretch their lead to 5-0. Iroquois would strike back
as Chancey Johnson would score beating Jeff Powless in order to make the score 5-1.
The second quarter which is what makes Clax unique due to the rule players must enter and exit the floor from the door furthest from the goalie helped keep the action going. This rule gives players a short path towards the net in the second and third period and allows for more goal scoring. Oshweken though continued the pressure as Vanevery would strike again with two goals in order to give the Demons a 6-4 lead, Oshweken would continue to pull away making the score 11-4 with only a minute left in the half. The Ironmen would get one back as Josh Johnson found the back of the net to make it 11-5 at the half. The
Demons would continue to keep the offensive pace in the second half as they dominated and won the game 18-15.
Chris Atwood the reigning league MOP tried his best to carry his team as he had 3 goals and five assists leading all point getters while his team mate Josh Johnson had four goals and an assists but it was not enough for the Ironmen to overcome the Demons. Wayne Vanevery put on a show scoring six goals and showing Demons fans not to miss Chris
Atwood, while Roger Vyse chipped in with six points with 3 goals and 3 assists. Jeff Powless continued where he left off last year as he made 44 saves on 62 shots and was able to keep the Ironmen from clawing back in this game.
Both teams will be back in action next weekend as the Demons will host the Brampton Inferno on Saturday at 1pm at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena. While the Ironmen host the Niagara Lock Monsters Sunday at 2pm.
