Friday night the defending Creator’s Cup champions Ohsweken Demons served the Niagara Lock Monsters their first loss of the year at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.
The game opened with each team exchanging goals until Wayne VanEvery tallied a pair of markers to take a 3-1 lead just under 10 minutes into the first.
The Lock Monsters replied with two goals from Dan Williams and Jon Arnold to lock the game up at three. The Demons answered with three straight goals, including Wayne VanEvery’s hat-trick goal.
Ohsweken opened the second frame with four goals to extend their lead to 10-3.
Niagara answered back with three goals to bring the score to 10-6, but Roger Vyse closed the half with his eleventh goal of the season and give the Demons an 11-6 lead.
Brock Badger and former Canisius Griffin Travis Gibbins opened the second half with his first career CLax goal to cut the Demon lead to four.
The Demons took control of the game as they peppered Niagara goaltender Grant Crawley with five goals to end the third quarter.
The Lock Monsters outscored the Demons 4-2 in the fourth quarter but it would not be enough to secure the win as Ohsweken topped Niagara 18-11
Leading the way for the Demons was Delby Powless with one goal and seven assists. Wayne VanEvery and Jeff Powless were close behind with seven points each.
Andrew Potter found the back of the cage twice and added four assists in the Lock Monsters loss.
Demons Goaltender Jeff Powless picked up the win in the cage while making 26 saves on 33 attempts.
The loss was awarded to Crawley while making 19 saves on 31 shots.
The Lock Monsters will look to bounce back as they take on the Durham Turfdogs at home Sunday night.
The Demons will travel to Toronto Monday night to take on the Shooting Stars at the newly revamped Maple Leaf Gardens (Mattamy Athletic Complex)
