The last few days of the month of February saw the Division III Men’s Lacrosse season truly kick into high gear with an appetizer of three games on February 27 followed by a huge plate of seventy-four games on Saturday and a “dessert” of eight games on Sunday, March 1.
In Glen Falls, NY, the St. Lawrence Saints defeated the Castleton Spartans 19-10 behind six goals from Tommy Hovey. Friday’s second game saw the Calvin men’s lacrosse team pick up the first victory of head coach Kyle Hofstaedter’s career on Friday afternoon, defeating Defiance College 11-5 in Pontiac, MI. The Berry College Vikings defeated the Alma College Scots 10-3 moving to 2-0 on the season as Cory Hall had three goals for the Vikings and lead them to victory.
On Saturday, big games included Plymouth State defeating Emmanuel 10-4 for their first victory of the season. Washington and Lee defeated Washington College 15-7 in a shocking loss for #4 ranked Washington College. Wesley dispatched Keystone 24-4 in the most lopsided game of the day behind five players scoring three goals each and two who had four goals each for the Wolverines. The win moves them to 2-0 on the season.
Other major games included the Clark University Cougars roaring to victory over the Becker College Hawks 23-4. Will Mandracchia lead Clark with five goals. The Stevenson Mustangs lead by senior Paul Danko defeated the Western New England Golden Bears by a score of 17-4. Danko had five goals while teammate Pat Candon helped key the effort with four assists of his own. The win moves the Mustangs to 2-1 on the season while the Golden Bears fell to 1-1.
For Sunday’s games, the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins were led by senior Mike Moran, who scored back to back goals as the game came down to the wire giving the Marlins a 14-13 victory over the Ferrum Panthers. In Lynchburg, VA. The #6 ranked Lynchburg College Hornets rallied from six goals down entering the fourth quarter to sting the #8 Cabrini College Cavaliers. For Lynchburg, Aaron Murphy finished with three goals, while Austin Stewart and Dane Angell both had two goals.
The SUNY Geneseo Knights defeated the Clarkson University Golden Knights 11-7. With the victory, Geneseo moves to 2-0 on the season and Clarkson falls to 0-1. The University of Dallas defeated Centenary College of Louisiana 10-7 to move to 3-2 overall on the season. Oberlin College’s Yeoman handled the Comets of Olivet 16-8 behind five goals by Nick Lobley.
Lastly, The Thomas men’s lacrosse team only generated nine shots total on the day as the Terriers fell to the Rivier University Raiders 19-3 on the road Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Thomas to 0-1 while Rivier moved to 2-0 on the season.
