Balanced scoring and tough defense push Dragons to victory
T.J. Foley and Michael Kay each scored a pair of goals as the Drexel Dragons (4-5) defeated Binghamton(2-5), 9-5 at Vidas Field. Foley came into the game without popping the twine, but today he would hit it twice, both on the power-play.
After tying the game late in the first quarter, Drexel outscored the Bear Cats 4-2 in the second to take a 5-3 lead. Drexel controlled the pace for the most part, but Binghamton stayed in striking distance throughout. Ryan Belka (Sr-M),finished the day with 1G/3A, Belka also set up the last two Dragons’ goals to put the game out of reach.
The Dragons outshot the Bear Cats 45-25, and also committed a season low 8 turnovers. Binghamton’s Tanner Cosens kept the Bear Cats close as he came up with 13 saves, some of them huge. Drexel’s defense allowed only five goals, the lowest total allowed since March 27,2013 when they defeated St. Joseph’s University 16-3. Jimmy Joe Granito (So-G) had seven saves for the Dragons including three in the final fifteen minuted to keep the Bear Cats off the scoreboard.
Seven different players hit the net for the Dragons as tight defense was the big attraction early on in the game. The defense for the Dragons caused seven turnovers and as a team picked up 27 loose balls.
Special teams were big as the Dragons went 3-4 on the man up, and went 3-4 on the man down.
After a slow start to the season in which the Dragons lost their first four game and being outscored 55-32, they have won 4 of last 5 outscoring the opponent 49-37.
Drexel now starts the defense of their 2014 CAA Title as they host Fairfield Saturday at 4pm.
