For the majority of the game, it looked like the outcome could go either way; but then Duke found their stride. The Duke Blue Devils led the Marist Red Foxes 9-6 at halftime and came out firing after that. Duke’s starting attack corps led the way for the Blue Devils combining for 11 goals and 17 overall points in a 19-11 Duke victory. After a very sloppy start to the season, Duke now improves to (6-4) on the year, while Marist loses their first game of the season, dropping their record to (5-1). After the game, Coach John Danowski had this to say about his team; “I think the guys are a little tired…That was four games in 10 days. But it’s something that our guys have to learn to do if they want to play in meaningful games down the line. We are delighted with our progress individually and collectively and look forward to a day off tomorrow.”
Attackman Jordan Wolf led all scorers in the game by tying his career-high with seven points (4g, 3a) but received huge help from junior Josh Dionne who scored four goals for the Blue Devils. Nine different players scored goals for Duke, including five with more than just one. Freshman attackman Case Matheis added three goals and three assists for a career-high six points. Also scoring for the Blue Devils were Josh Offit (2g), David Lawson (2g, 2a), Jake Tripuka (1g, 3a), Christian Walsh (1g, 1a), freshman Deemer Class (1g) and Will Haus (1g, 1a). A large part of Duke’s success against the Red Foxes was face-off specialist Brendan Fowler winning 21 of 33 from the face-off X. In goal, sophomore Kyle Turri posted eight saves and Luke Aaron stopped one.
Offensively for Marist, Connor Rice led the team with five points on one goal and four assists while Mike Begley posted four goals. Seven different players scored for the Red Foxes including Jack Doherty (2g), Drew Nesmith (1g), Jim Marks (1g, 1a), Aedan Herman (1g), and Gannon Osborn (1g, 1a). Unfortunately for Marist, their two face-off specialists couldn’t figure out Duke’s Fowler, as both Dominic Montemurro and Matt Dungan won four face-offs apiece of the 33 total taken. Goalie Dave Scarcello posted 11 saves against the high shooting Blue Devils (49 total shots).
Next up for Danowski and the Blue Devils is a home-game against the (3-3) Georgetown Hoyas on March 23rd. The Hoyas beat Providence early in the week 16-8 at home. For the Marist Red Foxes, their next game is also on March 23rd as they travel to take on the (1-5) Canisius Griffs. The Griffs defeated VMI on the 16th for their first win of the season.
