Junior Sam Llinares recorded career-highs of six goals and eight points and 11 Pride players tallied goals as Hofstra recorded its first men’s lacrosse shutout since 1970 with an 18-0 victory over the Jaspers of Manhattan College at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday evening.
Hofstra, which recorded the 10th shutout in school history, posted the first since a 27-0 whitewash of CCNY on April 7, 1970. Hofstra also notched their first victory of the year and improved to 1-2 on the young season.
Llinares, who recorded his 100th career point early in the second quarter on his fourth point of the evening, topped his previous best goal output of four set against Sacred Heart in 2013 and bested his previous high point output of seven points, achieved against Princeton last Saturday. He now has 10 goals and nine assists in three contests this season.
Hofstra also received two goals from senior Mike Malave and junior Brian von Bargen and one goal and one assist from junior Korey Hendrickson and sophomore Kris Clarke. Fourteen Hofstra players recorded at least one point in the contest as Pride coach Seth Tierney utilized his entire bench. Clarke also won 17 of 18 face-offs and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls.
Pride senior goalie Chris Selva needed to make only five saves in the first three quarters before being relieved by freshman Jack Concannon, who made one save in the final 15 minutes.
Hofstra scored six times in the first 7:39 of the game with Llinares scoring twice while Hendrickson, Malave, freshman Alex Moeser and senior Tyler Begley each tallied one goal for a 6-0 lead after one period. Hofstra outshot the Jaspers, 18-2 and winning all seven face-offs.
The Pride added four goals in each of the following three periods as Hofstra peppered Manhattan senior starter Michael Wiatrak with 29 shots, which he stopped nine and allowed 10, in the first 30 minutes. Freshman Michael Zingaro played the second half and made eight saves and allowed eight goals.
Four Hofstra players recorded their first collegiate goals in the contest with Moeser getting his in the first quarter, freshman Brendan Kavanagh getting his in the third quarter and classmates Tim Golden and Cole Considine getting theirs in the final period.
Hofstra outshot Manhattan, 54-13 in the game and picked up 34 ground balls to the Jaspers 15. The Pride also won 20 of 22 face-offs. Hofstra was 13-for-13 in the clears department.
The Pride had recorded nine shutouts prior to Tuesday evening’s blanking. Hofstra posted two in 1952, and one each in 1953, 1954, 1955, 1957, 1964, 1965 and 1970.
Hofstra returns to action this Saturday, February 28 when the Pride travel to Washington, D.C. to face the Hoyas of Georgetown at noon.
