Johns Hopkins Blue Jays avenged a loss to the Virginia Cavaliers by a final score of 19-7. In the win, midfielder Connor Reed had a career high six assists. The attack comprised of senior Wells Stanwick, junior Ryan Brown, and freshman Shack Stanwick combined for 15 points.
Hopkins and Virginia traded goals to start the contest. Jays midfielder Cody Radziewicz scored an unassisted goal to open the contest. Greg Coholan scored off an assist from attackman Ryan Lukacovic to answer. From there on, the Jays would ambush the UVA defense, scoring the next six goals of the first quarter.
John Crawley would have two goals in two possessions, with Ryan Brown scoring in between his tallies. Freshman midfielder Joel Tinney would get on the board with his first of three on the day to increate the lead to 5-1. To close the quarter, the Stanwick brothers would each get their first of the contest. Wells scored the first and the second came with :01 left in the quarter.
The Jays continued the momentum into the second quarter as they would score the next five goals to push the lead to as much as eleven. Holden Cattoni would score on an extra man opportunity, assisted by Brown. Shack Stanwick would score, along with Cattoni and Brown before Shack would get his second of the contest. With 3:12 left in the half, the visiting team led 12-1.
Lukacovic and Brown would trade goals and the score at half would be 13-2. Redshirt senior Eric Schneider and the Hopkins defense played a strong first half, with Schneider making important saves to continually put pressure on the UVA defense to stop the Hopkins offsense.
UVA’s Coholan would score to open the second half, but Hopkins again would counter when Kieran Eissler would score his fourth of the season three minutes later. After Lukacovic’s goal to make the score 14-4, Hopkins would score five of the next six.
Wells and Shack connected for the first in the run. Joel Tinney would finish his hat trick with just over five minutes left in the third quarter, scoring the next two goals. Crawley found Radziewicz for his second of the game with nine minutes remaining. The Blue Jays would be up 18-4.
UVA finally brought the drought when Tyler German scored an unassisted goal. The Blue Jays would score their final goal when Ryan Brown scored his fourth of the contest. The Cavaliers would score the final two to end the game. Owen van Arsdale would score a behind-the-back goal, assisted by Coholan.
Fittingly, senior Ryan Tucker would score the final goal of the game and his career, beating Will Ryan who substituted into the game for Schneider. Tucker had bee the most consistent member of the Cavaliers for the last four years and had career highs against the Jays earlier in the season.
Johns Hopkins now awaits tonights winner in the Syracuse-Marist matchup that will take place at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York. The game will be played in Annapolis, Maryland next weekend in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
