Hopkins Cruises Past Navy

The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays cruise to a 13-8 win over the visiting Naval Academy Midshipmen at Homewood Field. With the win the Jays are back at .500, as next week they travel to Syracuse to take on the top-ranked team in the nation. Navy falls to 3-3 as well on the season.

Hopkins had command of the game from the start. Reversing their fortunes from last week, the Jays outscored Navy 8-3 in the first half. In one span, Hopkins had outscored the Mids 8-1 before Navy would score the last two before half.

Connor Reed would open the scoring, beating Navy goalie John Connors high. Wells Standwick would find his brother Shack for the second just over a minute later to increase the lead to two. Navy would counter with DJ Plumer to cut the lead in half. After that, Navy would be held scoreless until just over three minutes in the half.

Kieran Eissler would get his first of the season. Two man advantage goals by Ryan Brown put Brown over the twenty goal mark for the third time in his career and the Jays at 5-1 advantage through one quarter.

The second quarter continued in the Jays favor as Wells Stanwick got his first of three goals on the day. Shack Stanwick would increase the lead to six with his second of the contest. Wilkins Dismuke would get his first with just under six minutes left in the half to get the Jays to an 8-1 lead.

Jack Ray would score an unassisted goal to get the lead to 8-2. With two minutes remaining in the half, Navy’s man-up would end the scoring when Kevin Wendel found Patrick Kenna. The Jays would be in commanding position heading into the third.

Just a minute into the second half, Shack Stanwick completed his hat trick to continue the Blue Jay dominance in scoring. Freshman midfielder Joel Tinney would get his first of two goals on the day to get the Jays into double digits. Wells Stanwick would get his second to increase the lead to 11-3 in favor of the Blue Jays.

Navy would finish the third quarter on a four goal run that would lead to fifth-year senior goalie Eric Schneider being replaced to finish the the quarter. T.J Hanzsche would start the run with his goal being assisted by Colin Flounlacker. Keena would get his second five minutes later.

To close the quarter, Navy would again score the final two goals. Flounlacker would get one of his own, assisted by Spencer Coyle. The last in the run came in the final 19 seconds when Keena found Kevin Wendel for the score.

The fourth would begin with Schneider returning to the net. The rest settled the goalie and he would end the quarter with six saves, far and away his best quarter of the day. The Jays were forced into turnovers, committing seven that final quarter, and the Mids put on constant pressue to which the Jays defense held.

Tinney would start the scoring with his second of the game. He has eight goals on the season and has become an important piece to that first midfield unit. Wells Stanswick finished the scoring for the Jays at the 9:36 mark of the fourth with his third. To finish the contest, the Mids Jack Ray scored the final goal to end the game 13-8 in favor of Johns Hopkins.

The Mids were led on the day by Patrick Keena, who had three points in the game (2 goals, 1 assist). John Connors had six saves in the loss. Navy held the advantage in face offs, winning 14-25. Lafayette is on the schedule next for the Mids, in a midweek tilt.
