Sophomore attackman Shack Stanwick scored 29 seconds into overtime to sink Navy’s upset of fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. It was the season opener for the Blue Jays, while Navy finished the day with a 1-1 record.
The Blue Jays came strong out of the gates, scoring the first three goals of the contest. Midfielder John Crawley scored the first two goals of the contest, both unassisted. After sitting out last season after leg surgery, face-off middie Craig Madarasz scored five seconds after Crawley’s tally to give the visiting team a three goal cushion.
Navy answered with two goals of their own to close the gap. Kevin Wendel scored on an extra-man opportunity, assisted by Patrick Keena, before Keena would get one of his own. Hopkins’ All-American Ryan Brown, who leads the nation in consecutive games with a goal, would score the next two put the Blue Jays up three into the second stanza.
Navy would again answer, which would continue the entirety of the game, with two unassisted games. Matt Rees and Wendel would score to again close the gap to a single goal. Freshman midfielder Drew Supinski would score the first goal of his career with 1:59 remaining in the half, which closed the scoring at 6-4 in favor of Hopkins.
Hopkins opened the scoring after halftime with an extra man goal when Stanwick found Brown with 8:55 remaining in the quarter. Navy would then answer with a three goal run to tie the game at 7 with 12:52 remaining in the game. Jack Ray would score in between two tallies from Greyson Torain.
The fourth quarter was all offense from both teams, as they accounted for nine total goals. Each time Hopkins would retake the lead, Navy would answer. Brown scored his fourth and fifth of the contest, but Navy answered with Ray and Kenna markers.
With six minutes remaining, Hopkins would go up by two goals. Senior Holden Cattoni would score his first of the season, followed by Ryan Brown’s sixth on a man-advantage. But Navy would answer when Jack Ray scored his fifth goal of the season, third of the game with 3:28 remaining. Casey Rees scored his first of the season with just 27 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
After the first overtime, Hopkins would have an extra-man opportunity in which they would end the game. John Crawley, who opened the scoring but remained quiet since, found Stanwick for his first goal of the game to end the contest.
It was the sophomore Brock Turnbaugh who got the start in goal for the Blue Jays after a fierce battle during Spring practice. He played well, overcoming early nerves, to earn the victory after stopping 13 shots, allowing 11 goals. Madarasz played strong as well, winning 14 of 24 faceoffs in the contest and taking every draw in the contest.
Up next for the Blue Jays, Saturday they travel locally to Catonsville to take on the UMBC Retrievers and former coach Don Zimmerman.
