Inferno Burn Through Ironmen

The Iroquois Ironmen came close to winning their first game of the season but fell short once again at home versus the Brampton Inferno. Brampton scored 37 seconds into the game en route to a 12-10 victory. They are now in a four way tie for first in the CLax standings while Iroquois sits in the basement tied for last place.

This game was back and forth for the first three quarters with neither team leading by more than 2 goals. Brampton trailed most of the game but turned it on in the fourth quarter outscoring Iroquois 4-1 in the final frame. The Ironmen had a lot of opportunities in the first three quarters and could have run away with this game but Jay Preece was outstanding in the Inferno net.

The Inferno were once again led by their leading scorer Ryan Campbell who finished the night with 7 points (4g 3a) including a natural hat trick in the fourth quarter. They also had big games from John McClure (4pts), Scott Tinning (3pts) and Dustin Caravello (3pts) while Preece made 53 saves in the win.

Iroquois was led by last year’s league leading scorer Chris Attwood and Alex Kedoh Hill. Attwood had 2 goals and 4 assists while Alex Kedoh Hill contributed 2 goals and 2 assists. Former Six Nations Arrows standout Jason Henhawk played a solid game in his debut with the Ironmen chipping in 2 assists. He was acquired by Iroquois earlier this week along with cousin Jake Henhawk in a deal that sent Tom Montour to the Ohsweken Demons. The latter Henhawk was on the bench as the back up goalie while Jake Lazore suffered the loss for Iroquois.

Brampton now sits in a four way tie for first place along with the Toronto Shooting Stars, Niagara Lock Monster and the Ohsweken Demons but with three more games still to take place this weekend, look for the standings to be shuffled once again.

If the Barrie Blizzard win their matinee tomorrow against the Durham TurfDogs, the Ironmen will be the only winless team in the Canadian Lacrosse League. Iroquois’ schedule doesn’t get any easier and they have a tough road ahead them. They meet the Ohsweken Demons on Friday and then travel to Toronto next Sunday to meet the red hot Shooting Stars. Brampton also has the rest of the weekend off; they will be back in action Friday at home versus Toronto and then again on Sunday against the 0-4 Blizzard.

The next CLax game goes this afternoon as the winless Barrie Blizzard are on the road to take on the Durham TurfDogs. Game time is 2pm from the General Motors Centre in downtown Oshawa Ontario.
