The Rochester Knighthawks have made a few trades out to Denver with star players recently. Two years ago it was John Grant Jr and now it’s Casey Powell being shipped to the Colorado Mammoth for defender Jon Sullivan and a third round pick.
The NLL trade deadline is on Wednesday and Colorado and Rochester are the last place teams in their respective conferences. It’s rare to see moves these big at the deadline in a nine team league with eight in the playoffs, but these teams are desperate to get back into the postseason picture.
The Knighthawks needed to add a defender and they did so in acquiring the veteran Sullivan. He’s played nine seasons between Colorado and Minnesota.
Meanwhile, the Mammoth offense is starting to look strong with Grant, Powell, Gavin Prount, Jamie Lincoln, Adam Jones and Jordan McBride. Between the turnover at the goaltender position and this, they have made the moves they have needed to improve.
Colorado has the least amount of goals in the west at 111, but that should be able to change now. Meanwhile, Rochester will have to find a way to replace the production from Powell that included 22 points.
This weekend the Mammoth face the Buffalo Bandits in a rematch from last week while Rochester faces the Edmonton Rush in a rematch of last season’s championship game.
