According to the Peterborough Examiner, the Peterborough Lakers of Major Series Lacrosse have been forced to forfeit their first three games of the season. The Lakers, who had been 4-1, are now 1-4. This is due to the fact that forward Scott Evans had been supposed to sit out the first game of the season with a suspension but he did not, so the league took away the wins they had earned in the games he did play.
Evans had been suspended for his role in a fight with Brooklin Redmen defenseman Steve Priolo in their last game of the 2013 season. However, he did not serve his suspension. Moreso, no one even noticed it until now.
Evans was handed an extended suspension which could last as many as six games and he sat out of Thursday’s win at Oakville which turned out to be the Lakers first official win of the season. He is already serving a three-game suspension for a slashing penalty against Brooklin on June 5.
“We wouldn’t have played him if we had known,” head coach Joe Sullivan told the Peterborough Examiner “If we had made a mistake they should have told us. We want to do what is right and that is why we are appealing. We hope to fix it. It was a communication thing. We just didn’t know.’’
The Lakers next game is against Brooklin tonight.
