The Major League Lacrosse draft took place on Saturday with all eight teams making selections. Several trades took place as well throughout the night, and we are here to grade all of the moves made by the MLL clubs.
Ohio Machine: A
Ohio needed offense last season and after adding Steele Stanwick in last year’s draft, this year they pick up Peter Baum and all of a sudden that attack looks very solid. They also picked up Marcus Holman from North Carolina and Logan Schuss from Ohio State for an all around great draft addressing all of their needs.
Charlotte Hounds: A
Mike Sawyer was the guy for Charlotte and they got him. They also picked up Tucker Durkin who might have been the best defender in the draft. Overall they had some attack problems as well and addressed them with Sawyer, and picked up a solid player in Durkin.
Boston Cannons: A –
Boston scored getting Will Manny in the second round, a player out of UMass who was projected to go a lot higher. Scott Ratliff was another solid pick up after they lost Jack Reid to New York and they also got a good scorer in Cam Flint. Boston had a very underrated draft getting most of the players they wanted and needed.
Hamilton Nationals: B
Hamilton saw turnover with their coach and GM on this day, but they still got the player they wanted in Chris LaPierre, and also ended up with Josh Hawkins later on. Garrett Thul and Jason Noble were also solid picks for them.
New York Lizards: B –
Some of New York’s grade here comes from the trade for Mark Matthews which was pretty much a steal. They also picked up David Earl, which sure makes up for the weak draft they had. JoJo Maresco is probably their top pick of the day.
Chesapeake Bayhawks: B –
The Bayhawks didn’t have many needs but they still did a pretty good job for themselves. They added Jesse Bernhardt which is an incredible add to their already strong longpole unit and they also added Kevin Cooper, a solid get for them.
Denver Outlaws: C
Denver had a bad day. First they traded away Matthews, their most prolific player, and then they had a poor draft. Brian Megill seemed like a good pick but it went downhill from there. Landon Carr might not play for them and Davis Butts might not fit in their system.
Rochester Rattlers: C –
Rochester had a lot more needs they should have addressed. Instead they took a division three player in the second round and also took Joey Kemp. He’s the best goalie in the draft and their best pick, but they already have John Galloway playing the position.
