MSL Players of the Week: Call Ups Prove Themselves

The league-leading Brooklin Redmen became the first Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) team to reach the ten win mark after picking up three victories (11-4 and 9-7 over Brampton, 11-9 over Peterborough) in Week 6. During his first season in a Redmen uniform, Shayne Jackson continues to lead a resurgentBrooklin offence. The Whitby Warriors product sits second in league scoring (18g, 24a, 42pts) after racking up 12 points (6g, 6a) during Week 6.

Jackson and Brooklin made mid-week waves acquiring goaltender Mike Poulin and Mike Teeter from the Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks. Poulin tended the twine for both of Brooklin’s wins versus Brampton, including an impressive debut in which the netminder turned aside 54 of 58 shots. Teeter had six points (3g, 3a) in his first three games with the Redmen, notably helping Brooklin earn a come-from-behind win versus Brampton. Trailing 7-5 in the third period, Teeter kicked off a four-goal run that gave the Redmen a 9-7 victory while also assisting on the game-winning tally from Mike Triolo.

Despite a disappointing loss to Brooklin, the Peterborough Lakers still managed to earn a pair of wins versus Oakville and K-W thanks to some familiar names in Laker nation. Mark Steenhuis and John Grant Jr. each had a hat-trick and three assists for six points in an 11-6 win over Oakville. While Major League Lacrosse commitments limited Grant’s availability to just one game, Steenhuis continued to pile on the points with five (2g, 3a) versus Brooklin and six (1g, 5a) versus K-W. Steenhuis has comfortably sat atop the MSL scoring charts throughout the 2014 season, as he continues to lead the league with 55 points (26g, 29a).

Peterborough’s Shawn Evans posted 12 points during Week 6, adding to his season totals of 36 (6g, 30a) in nine games. Evans is currently in the midst of an oddly repetitive scoring streak, as the Lakers’ spark plug has registered four points in five consecutive appearances.

Kitchener-Waterloo earned a pivotal two points after a 9-8 win over Six Nations. The Kodiaks were led to victory by Luke Laszkiewicz’ five point effort (3g, 2a). The righty shooter has stepped up for Kitchener-Waterloo in the absence Dhane Smith, who was sent to the Victoria Shamrocks of the Western Lacrosse Association, posting ten points (6g, 4a) in the four games since Smith’s departure.

Week 6 also featured a pair of stellar performances from Junior A call-ups Austin Shanks and Holden Cattoni. Cattoni had four points (2g, 2a) in Peterborough’s win over K-W, while Shanks posted three points (2g, 1a) in a Brooklin’s 9-7 defeat of Brampton.
