A young Brooklin team took on Oakville Wednesday night where the Redmen took the 9-4 win. Both teams were missing some stars and had some new college players and MSL draft picks play the first game of the season. Brooklin was missing players such as Cam Holding along with many other NLL players who seemed to just need the time off after a long season.
Joining Brooklin was NLL vet Shawn Williams who ended up not playing this winter. He had five assists in the game. Also MSL draft pick out of Marquette University Kyle Witlow stepped up scoring (3G, 1A) Kyle is a great addition to this Redman.
Both Dan Linter and rookie Reilly O’Conner had two points. Reilly was making his MSL debut after a stellar career with the Whitby Junior A team. On defense they were led by NLL Black Wolves player Sheldon Burns fresh off his first year in the NLL. Another young defender is second year player Graeme Hossack who just had a great finish to his college career at Lindenwood University helping his team to the NCAA Division II tournament as well as gaining first team All American. Graeme will be a top pick in this years NLL draft come September. Zach Higgins made 36 saves and looked great in net.
For Oakville, Shayne Adams, who just finished up playing Division I at Detroit Mercy, had two goals both coming in the second period. Shayne is going to be a great young player for Oakville and a top NLL draftee.
Sean Gillies and Chris Buswell scored the only other goals for Oakville, as the offense never got going. On defense they are led by Minnesota Swarm players Alex Crepinsek and Jason Noble along Lehigh grad and top NLL prospect Patrick Corbett.
Rookie defenseman Brier Jonathan who was drafted to Oakville after winning the Minto Cup for Six Nation Arrows last summer as well as a founders for the Rebels in 2012 had a good showing. Brier player for the Rochester Knighthawks and should be a great defender.
In net was Toronto Rock practice team member Steve Fryer who was just acquired the other day by Oakville in a trade for Jordan Macintosh. Fryer made 27 saves on 35 of the shots that were made on net. Oakville may have lost the game 9-4 but they look to rebound when they face Brampton next Monday, for Brooklin they will play Brampton next Wednesday.
