Friday the 13th proved unlucky for many teams throughout the NCAA Division III schedule as adverse weather conditions cancelled the Denison Big Red home opener versus Albion. The game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. has not had a make-up date announced.
The four other games saw the Rhodes College Lynx take a bite out of the Southwestern University Pirates, 16-14 winning the team’s home opener. Ryan Fennelly for the Lynx scored eight goals leading the way while Jason Lee added three for the Lynx.
In Sewanee, TN. The Tigers of Sewanee played the Tigers of Colorado College to an 11-5 victory for Sewanee. George Bukawyn for Sewanee led the team with five goals, while five players from Colorado all had one goal apiece for their side.
Conner Annunziato for the Goucher College Gophers tied the school record for assists with seven when he had a hand in 10 of Goucher’s goals in tonight’s season-opening 17-5 triumph over Millsaps. The junior attackman scored three times and set up seven more goals, matching the record set back on March 1, 1997. Millsaps Majors goalie Riley McLean led the team with 20 saves in the losing effort as Millsaps has now fallen to 0-3 on the season.
The Christopher Newport Captains shocked the world last night for the second time in program history when they defeated #15 ranked Washington and Lee, 13-9. It stands as the first triumph in a season opener by the Captains since 2011. Additionally, the setback is the first in an opener by the Generals since the 2007 season. John Thompson for the Captains tallied five goals to guide Christopher Newport, while Cameron Dabir had four for the Generals.
There were fourteen regular games on the slate for Saturday (Merrimack played two scrimmages against Skidmore and Springfield.) The Berry Vikings, at home defeated the Young Harris Mountain Lions 10-9 in a thrilling game decided with only 1:44 left in regulation. Southwestern (TX) played Carthage losing 11-4 in front of the home crowd after the team gave up six goals in the first quarter. The University of Dallas Crusaders lost 27-3 as the Hendrix College Warriors put up 80 shots on the Crusaders in route to the victory. Carson Boone led the way for Hendrix with eight goals while Alex Ziolkowski netted two for the Crusaders.
Wesley (Del.) defeated Ferrum 11-4 at home behind a strong effort by Sam Seibert with four goals as the Wolverines move to 1-0 on the season. The Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan beat the Augustana Vikings in non-conference play 17-4 with the first goal coming 90 seconds into the contest showing that the team can score. The Bishops move to 1-0 while Augustana falls to 0-1. Hood College’s Brandon McCormick scored the game-winner with just 27 seconds left to lift the Hood Blazers to a season-opening 8-7 win over Southern Virginia.
The Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets stung the Piedmont Lions 10-8 behind four goals by Ryan Davidson and 15 saves by Bryan Davies. Spencer Ortiz had four goals for the Lions. The Mary Washington Eagles defeated Hampden-Sydney 14-13 in a close, nail biter of a game.
Thiel College’s Tomcats lost to a pair of Presidents as the Washington and Jefferson Presidents used a five goal first quarter to eke out the Tomcats in Greenville, PA 9-8. Tim Angell led the Presidents with four goals while Zachary Fredericks scored three goals.
Birmingham Southern moved to 2-0 on the season as they beat Greensboro College in Greensboro 8-6. The Shenandoah University men’s lacrosse team earned its second straight win to start the 2015 season with a 9-7 non-league victory over Methodist University Saturday afternoon.
Juniors Aaron Murphy and Austin Stewart combined for nine goals Saturday as the eighth-ranked Lynchburg College men’s lacrosse team defeated #3 Salisbury University 12-7 in a battle of top 10 teams. Lynchburg opened the game with three straight goals, two from Murphy. Each team added a late tally in the period to give LC a 4-1 lead in route to the hard fought win.
The Catholic University of America men’s lacrosse team dominated their season opener against Bridgewater (Va.) on Saturday, taking a 15-7 win over the visiting Eagles at Cardinal Stadium.
