NCAA: Jays Take on High Flying Albany

The 10th ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays will return to Homewood Field for the first time in three games when they host the 20th ranked Albany Great Danes tonight. Johns Hopkins and Albany have identical records heading into the match-up, both sitting at 6-3.

After going 5-1 to start the season, with four of five games being played at Homewood Field, Johns Hopkins fell to Syracuse and North Carolina in their recent three game road stint.

Sophomore attackman Wells Stanwick leads the Blue Jays offensively with 33 points. The Boys Latin alum has already surpassed his point totals from his frosh campaign (23) by ten with five games remaining.

Fellow sophomore attackman Brandon Benn joins Stanwick as a leader on the Jays offense. The Canadian sharp shooter has 21 goals in eight games played this season.

The midfield unit for the Jays is led by the senior trio of John Ranagan, Lee Coppersmith and John Greeley, who have combined for 44 points on the year. Junior midfielder Rex Sanders has also been impressive thus far with 11 goals on the year after notching only one tally on his first two years as a Blue Jay.

Senior captain Tucker Durkin and senior Chris Lightner lead a stellar Jays defensive core that includes stand out players junior Jack Reilly and sophomore Michael Pellegrino. Pellegrino has been solid on the back end with 10 caused turnovers and 26 ground balls. Durkin leads the team in caused turnovers with 11.

Pierce Bassett will tend the twine for Johns Hopkins. Despite an unimpressive 5-3 record, Basset has made ten-plus saves in five of his eight appearances during his senior campaign.

The Great Danes look to continue a two game winning steak heading into tonight’s game. Albany’s highly powered offense, currently ranked second in division one in goals  scored with 136 on the season, will be relied upon to in order to earn a victory on the Homewood turf. Albany’s offense will be led by the Thompson family trio who have accounted for 74 goals and 129 points on the season.

Sophomore Lyle Thompson has thrived this year since moving from midfield to join brother Miles and cousin Ty on the attack unit. Lyle currently leads the NCAA in points (64) and assists (39).

Tonight’s game marks the 12th ever meeting between Albany and Johns Hopkins, with the Jays coming out victorious all but one game. Face-off is set for 7 p.m at Homewood Field.
