The first weekend of games is in the books for NCAA Men’s Lacrosse. Start of the 2013 season saw its fair share of heartbreakers, dominations and nail biters. Can the second weekend of games be as exciting? Only time will tell.
Friday
D1:
Wagner (0-0) vs. Providence (0-0) 1pm – This will be the start of the 2013 season for each team. In last year’s meeting, Wagner dropped the ball game to Providence 13-5. With the addition of John Galloway to the coaching staff, one can only imagine that the Friars goaltenders and defense have gotten that much better. The Seahawks will be out for revenge after the thrashing they took in 2012.
Navy (1-0) vs. Detroit Mercy (0-1) 4pm – Navy opened up strong with a humongous 20-7 win over VMI. Sorry to say that the Titans didn’t have the same luck as they fell to Ohio State 14-8. Friday’s meeting will be the first between the Midshipmen and Detroit Mercy since the Titans program was created in 2009. Coach Sowell has made some noise so far with Navy, and will have pressure to keep up the pace. Detroit Head Coach Matt Holtz will be preparing his team for battle and will look to spoil Navy’s hopes of going 2-0 since 2009.
D2:
Tampa (1-0) vs. Limestone (0-0) 7pm – Losing to Dowling in the 2012 NCAA Division 2 Finals wasn’t what Limestone had in mind. The Saints travel to Tampa for their season opener to challenge the Spartans in their second year at the D2 level. Tampa has already picked up their first win, downing Florida Southern 12-7 and has a lot of confidence headed into Friday night’s game. Beating Limestone would be a huge statement for the Spartans, but they will have to stop a Saint’s team that has experience, skill and fire in their hearts after coming up short last season.
D3:
Greensboro (0-1) vs. Colorado College (0-0) 330pm – 2007 was the last time these two met, having Colorado College take down Greensboro 9-7. The Tigers were under a different coach back then, and things tend to change over time. Fortunately for the Pride, they already have a game under their belt. Providing them the opportunity to fix their mishaps after falling to Salisbury on Sunday, 17-3.
Hendrix (0-1) vs. Huntingdon (0-1) 7pm – 9-8 was the final last season, with Huntingdon obtaining the victory. In their 13-6 season opener loss, the Warriors saw junior attackman Cameron Millstone step up and acquire five of the six goals. For Huntingdon, they have a little more work to do as they saw Birmingham Southern easily grasp the win from under them, 22-10. Last year’s top scorer for the Hawks, sophomore Brandon Sewell, tallied three points. While freshman attackman Jakob Works recorded four goals in their loss. This game is sure to be a fight to the finish as both teams started the season 0-1 and will do whatever they can to get that first win.
