We have a rematch this weekend of one of the best lacrosse games to ever take place that was last year’s Albany vs. Notre Dame playoff game. Now these to clubs meet at the same spot in 2015 looking to win and advance to the final four.
Lyle Thompson leads Albany with 116 points. When Lyle teams up with freshman Connor Fields, who has 82 points, as a lefty attack man he is the best freshman this spring season. Also Seth Oakes who was a All World player at the U19 games playing one spring at Onondaga Community College in 2013 before sitting out last year and joining the Great Danes this spring. Seth is from Akwesanse reservation and has 64 point after missing two games this season.
Besides this great offense the world now knows goalie Blaze Riorden for his coast-to-coast goal vs. Cornell but he also has 200 saves this spring. Defender Mike Russell has made a name for himself at Albany this season he had a great game vs. Syracuse’s Kevin Rice. Mike is not only physical but has great food work and stick skills.
Norte Dame also has one of the best players in college lacrosse right now Matt Kavanagh out of Rockville Centre, Long Island. Matt has 50 point this season he is very fast and has a great stick he is not very big but his tough as nails. Joining Kavanagh on attack is senior Connor Doyle who has 46 points and has been a mainstay on Norte Dames offense the past few years.
Also freshman Mikey Wynne (32G, 3A) knows how to finish the ball and get it in the back of the net. Sophomore midfielder out of Michigan Sergio Perkovic made a name for himself in last year’s final. The big middie has a rocket of a shot 31 points right now and 25 of them are goals. In net, Notre Dame has Shane Doss who is a sophomore and won his job back this year he has 127 saves right now and has a lock down defense in front of him.
This game should be a thriller it is tough to say who will win Norte Dame is out of the power conference in the ACC and Albany is just out of the American East. All you can say is if anyone can bring Albany to their first ever-final four it will be Lyle Thompson. Can he do it or will Matt Kavanagh dash the Danes hopes yet again?
