NLL Week One: What Went Wrong, What Went Right

Philadelphia Wings

Right—Complete game was played.  They won every quarter with no let up. Jordan Hall led the way 5G/2A.  New Wings Kyle Buchanan 3G/5A, Tracey Kelusky 2G/4A, and Ryan Ward 5A made their presence known.  Power Play 3-6.  Moved ball well on inside and two man game. Solid performance by Evan Kirk.

Wrong—Too many unnecessary penalties, need to be more dominant on the face-offs, getting beat one-on-one after losing the face-off.  Allowing opponents too much space on outside shots.

Buffalo Bandits

Right—Second year forward Dhane Smith 3G/1A, Mark Steenhuis got off to a good start 2G/3A.  Power Play 4-8

Wrong—Goalie Anthony Cosmo pulled after three quarters, allowed opponent to disrupt his game by coming across the crease.  Too many penalties, defense was pushed around by stronger offense.

Minnesota Swarm

Right—Defense & Tyler Carlson held the reigning champs to only eight goals. Defense was tight only allowing 34 shots.

Wrong—Rookie Logan Schuss, Kiel Matisz, Shayne Jackson, combined for three goals.  Only 37% winning on face-offs.

Rochester Knighthawks

Right—Dan Dawson & Joel McCready combine for 4G/7A.  Matt Vinc was stellar stopping 45/51 shots

Wrong—Stephen Keogh, Cody Jamieson, Johnny Powless a combined 3G/3A.  Only 34 shots on goal, should be more.

Colorado Mammoth

Right—Adam Jones 4G & John Grant Jr., 3G.  Rookie Dillon Ward stopped 10/12 shots after replacing Tye Belanger. Bob Snider 60% face off wins.  Well disciplined.

Wrong—Breakdown in second quarter, outscored 6-2, Tye Belanger 11 goals on 26 shots.  Drew Westervelt only 1 goal.  19:37 between goals (2nd-3rd quarter)

Edmonton Rush

Right—Well balanced scoring. Curtis Knight & Zack Greer 3G each.  Aaron Bold 75% saves.  Played well disciplined lacrosse, only two penalties.  Big second quarter 6-2.

Wrong—Rookie of the Year Mark Matthews 0 goals.  Team went 17:11 in between goals (3rd-4th quarter)
