–Hopkins 16-4 Win Over UMBC–
Baltimore, Maryland – The Johns Hopkins Blue Jays opened the season with a decisive win against the UMBC Retrievers, winning 16-4. With the win, Coach Pietramala becomes the first in all time wins as a coach, moving one better than legendary coach Bob Scott.
The Jays jumped out early on the Retrievers and took a commanding first quarter lead. Connor Read opened the 2015 scoring with an unassisted marker in the first minute. Newly appointed starting attackman Wilkins Dismuke made it 2-0 with his unassisted goal three minutes later.
Freshman Shack Stanwick would score the next two, both unassisted, to start his Blue Jay career off well. Ryan Brown would score the next two, the first assisted by Pat Fraser, to give the Jays the 6-0 lead.
UMBC got on the board in the second when Dylan McDermott scored, cutting the lead to 6-1. Joel Tinney again but the Jays up by five with his first goal of his career, also being his first game. Ryan Brown and Michael Pellegrino would score on a four-goal run starting with Tinney’s marker. Brown having two before Pellegrino ripped home a shot after Wells Stanwick found him open. Nate Lewnes would score to close the half at 10-2.
The Blue Jays defense would hold UMBC scoreless during the third quarter and the Jays would push the lead to 13-2. Brown scored his fifth and sixth of the contest with Cody Radziewicz getting his first of the year in between his goals. Junior Ryan Brown would end up with seven goals on the day.
Pat Young would double his team’s output in the fourth, the first coming with just under thirteen minutes to play in the contest. Two man advantage goals by the Jays further increased their lead. Pat Fraser would get his first off an assist from Wells Stanwick. Brown closed his day with his seventh goal, assisted by Fraser. Young and Shack Stanwick traded goals to close the scoring.
Hopkins defense stifled the Retrievers from the starting whistle. Redshirt senior goalie Eric Schneider was up to the task for the first three quarters, giving way to freshman Brock Turnbaugh in the fourth.
Junior midfielder Pat Young led the Retrievers on the day with two goals. Connor Gordon started in net for UMBC, making eight saves, before being relieved by David Pisanic, who also made eight saves.
Schneider made four saves in the victory for the Jays. The Hopkins offense was led by its attack scoring. The four attackman used regularly by the Jays produced a total of 15 points. Brown led in goals with seven and Wells Stanwick led in assists with three.
Next for the Jays is Towson University this coming Tuesday.
