An NCAA All-American, NCAA National Champion, MLL All-Star and MLL MVP, Wagner men’s lacrosse coach Matt Poskay boasts an incredibly successful lacrosse resume. With only 3 wins since the 2007 season, Wagner lacrosse has not seen the same level of success. Poskay will look to revamp the struggling Seahawks during his second season at Wagner.
Despite going 1-13 in the first season with Poskay at the helm, there were positives from the 2012 season. Junior midfielder Nick DePhillips, an Ohio State transfer who joined Wagner after Poskay was named head coach, finished with 27 points and was named to the All-Northeast Conference second team.
Senior midfielder Colin O’Rourke finished closely behind DePhillips in team scoring last season with 25 points. O’Rourke has shown consistent play during his Seahawk career, posting over 70 points during his 3 years at Wagner. O’Rourke will look to continue his impressive personal numbers in his senior year. Poskay’s eye for talent will also be open for evaluation during the 2013 season as 13 freshman join the Seahawks’ roster.
When one looks at Wagner’s 3-84 record in the past 6 seasons, it is easy to jump to the conclusion that this program is beyond saving. However, Matt Poskay knows how to prevail in the face of adversity. In addition to his impressive lacrosse background, even more incredible is the fact Poskay was diagnosed with and treated for testicular cancer in 2009. Despite the cancer, Poskay returned in 2010 to lead the MLL in scoring with 52 points. With lacrosse expertise and life experiences to spare, Poskay will look to be the motivational force that revolutionizes the Wagner lacrosse program.
