The Saskatchewan Rush remained active on the trade front on Monday, shipping lefty forward Riley Loewen to the Calgary Roughnecks for a 2017 second round draft pick.
Since the Rush are projected to use their first overall draft selection next week to take lefty forward Ryan Keenan, Saskatchewan was going to have to make room. The team already made another switch on the left side earlier on Monday when they swapped Zack Greer for Adam Jones.
“The 2017 draft class is an excellent one,” noted Rush general manager and coach via press release Derek Keenan. “We always have to keep an eye on our future and especially in this case when we need to ensure that we are properly situated for a draft that is so well-stocked with young talent.”
Loewen adds some much needed help to the Roughnecks left side of the offense as well. They are expected to add another lefty in the first round of the draft. The three-year veteran forward has 82 career points with the Rush, where he contributed to two NLL title teams.
The former second round draft selection only got into 12 games last season and tallied three goals. The Rush are a deep team offensively, so Loewen might get some more playing time with Calgary.
The trade is also the third trade in the last week leading up to the NLL draft after New England sent Jordan Hall to Georgia earlier in the week.
