Yesterday the Colorado Sabertooths defeated the Chicago Outlaws 14-11 to defend their Continental Indoor Lacrosse League title.
The Sabertooths, a two year old franchise, become the first team in the CILL to win back to back championships in the league’s three year history. They defeated the Pittsburgh Octane the day before to advance to the championship game. Meanwhile, the Outlaws got there by defeating their rivals the Grand Rapids Dragonfish.
Garrett Fitzgerald started in net for Colorado after being the backup goaltender all year. Regular starter Jeremy Ogden was out with an injury, but Fitzgerald stepped up to stop a potent Chicago offense. Meanwhile, Desmond Bailey also played well but it wasn’t enough to beat the high-powered Sabertooths.
Chicago and Colorado were deadlocked at 11 goals each with two minutes remaining before the Sabertooths went on a scoring spree and took the last three goals of the game. The game winning goal went to Kevin Tait, who made it 12-11 late in the game to give them the championship. Taylor Embury had scored a goal a few minutes before to tie the game up at 11.
We congratulate the Sabertooths on a terrific season and their second straight title, and we congratulate everyone involved in the CILL on a great and fun season of box lacrosse.
