The LXM ATS Sacramento proved to be nothing less than an exciting event in the State Capitol. The LXM ATS (Lacrosse x Movement Tournament Series) was highlighted by incredible California weather. Leading up to the game LXM PROs ran clinics throughout the day, instructing youth teams on face-offs, shooting, dodges, goaltending, and more. The LXM PRO 916 game proved to be a heated battle between Team STX and Maverik United, with both teams stacked with some of the best players in the sport.
Maverik United opened up the game scoring at 14:12 with a nice two-man game from behind the cage. Corp fed Christmas for the goal to put Maverik United up 1-0. Two minutes later Geoff Worley put Team STX on the board when he intercepted an outlet pass from Maverik United’s Keeper Johnny Rodriguez and stuffed it in an open net to tie the game up. Whit McCarthy scored next on the run for Maverik United with 9:20 remaining in the quarter. Maverik United continued to extend their lead with a goal from Erik Krum at 5:26, assisted by Christmas. Sam Bradman of Team STX had his first goal of 5 on the day at 3:10 to bring the game within one ending the first quarter.
Peter Baum started the second quarter with an explosive move from X scored his first goal of three on the day to tie the game up 3-3 with 14:16 remaining in the 2nd. Both goalies played outstanding as possessions went back and fourth early in the quarter. The next goal would come at 8:59 for Team STX when Jack Walsh ripped a low angle rebound he scooped up after a shot from Peter Baum up top. At 3:47 Shamel Bratton tied the game up for Maverik United with an unassisted goal, getting inside on Team STX’s defense. Davy Emala responded quickly however with a goal of his own to put Team STX back on top 5-4 with three minutes left in the quarter. The half ended with Team STX man-up after a cross-checking penalty against Maverik United’s Nick Tintle.
Starting the third quarter man-up, Team STX’s Peter Baum would make Maverik United pay for the penalty, firing a lefty shot from up top that got past Rodriquez low and away and put Team STX up 6-4. Adrenaline Athlete Whit McCarthy scored his second goal of the day at 13: 43 with a time and room bomb off a pass from Corp. This goal brought Maverik United within one. Sam Bradman and Max Davis pulled off an incredible hidden ball trick with 12:27 left in the quarter. As everyone watched Davis, including Maverik United’s goalie Rodriguez, Bradman ripped the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the game, putting Team STX back up by two goals 7-5. Both teams would continue to trade off scoring this quarter with goals coming from Maverik United’s Erik Krum and Nick Tintle and two more Team STX goals by Baum and Bradman. Team STX took the lead, 9-8 at the end of the quarter.
Sam Bradman opened up the scoring in the 4th at 10:43 with a diving shot as he was hit from behind by a Maverik United defenseman. Once again, however, his former teammate at Salisbury, Erik Krum, would respond with a big goal for Maverik United to cut the lead to one (10-9 Team STX ahead). Team STX’s goalie, Matt Russell, stood on his head in the 4th quarter with a couple point blank saves to hang on to the lead for Team STX. Davy Emala would score with 6:52 left in the game to put STX back up by two goals, and Bradman gave Team STX their biggest lead of the game at 5:32 when he caught a pass from teammate Xander Ritz and slung it into the back of the net to put STX up 12-9. The three goal lead proved to be too much as Team STX would hang on to win 12-10.
Sam Bradman was awarded MVP of the game with his five goals and one assist. Matt Russell played an instrumental role in protecting Team STX’s lead, making 16 saves despite breaking his thumb mid game. Johny Rodriguez had a great showing as well with 17 saves. After the hard fought game, players rolled out their sore muscles with SKLZ equipment. Post game, the LXM PROs headed over to the official Knockaround autograph session where they met local youth players competing in the Adrenaline Tournament Series surrounding the event.
