Three out of the six Major Series Lacrosse (MSL) teams concluded their season Thursday, heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
After defeating Oakville 11-7 in a brawl filled game on Wednesday, Brooklin repeated the feat with a 12-5 road win over Oakville. Kiel Matisz had four goals, including two shorthanded tallies, and three assists for seven points to lead the Redmen to victory. Redmen veteran Shawn Williams had two goals and four assists for six points. Williams leads the Redmen in scoring with 27 goals and 76 assists for 103 points, surpassing the team’s second highest scorer Derek Hopcroft (31g, 34a) by 38 points and currently leads all MSL scorers heading into the final weekend of the regular season.
The Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks closed out their regular season with a commanding 17-4 win over the Brampton Excelsiors. Every K-W player, apart from goaltender Rick McGarr, registered a point in the victory. The Kodiaks finish with a 10-9-1 record, good enough for fourth place and a match-up with the first place Six Nations Chiefs in the MSL playoffs.
The Peterborough Lakers defeated the first place Six Nations Chiefs 14-9. Shawn Evans had three goals and five assists for eight points in the win for Peterborough. Lakers star John Grant Jr. also had an outstanding night, finishing with three goals and four assists for eight points. Craig Point (2g, 2a), Kasey Biernes (2g, 2a) and Kedoh Hill (1g, 3a) each had four points for the Chiefs in the loss. Six Nations was without the services of leading scorer Colin Doyle as well as Cody Jamieson, third on the team in scoring. Six Nations will take on the Oakville Rock in their regular season finale on Sunday, July 28, while Peterborough and Oakville will clash on Monday, July 29 to officially close the 2013 MSL regular season.
