This past weekend was a big one for our team and for the organization as a whole. First of all we hosted the Johnny Mourandian indoor lacrosse clinic on Thursday and Friday at the Essex Skating Facility. Johnny is the GM of the Philadelphia Wings as some of you may know and one of the most passionate lacrosse people I’ve ever met.
On Thursday morning I’ve had the chance to work with two young goaltenders that had never even seen box lacrosse goalie equipment before and boy was I impressed! They both took the floor ready to learn and make the big stops. I actually didn’t do much as they were already so in control. I’ll make sure the Voyageurs keep an eye on these two so they can develop.
Friday night was not about learning or getting to know the sport, it was about battling for the first spot in the QSLL. For the occasion we hosted the Kahnawake Mohawks, the defending champs, for the last time of the season. They came out on fire taking a lead in shots and in goals and retreaded to the locker room with a 3-2 advantage. The second period was no different as the Mohawks capitalized on an undisciplined home team building their lead up to 8-5. We didn’t give up and we knew the third period could be much different as our main perk is athleticism. It all came down to the last 3 minutes where we exchanged a couple a goals but ended up on top 13-11. Shots were 45-45 and our last goal was an empty netter meaning it all came down to one save/shot/goal.
Saturday night was a much different story. I could tell our guys were a little tired from the battle against the Mohawks and we knew it was not going to be easy as we took on the Presidents’ cup champions the Akwesasne Braves. The Braves won that game 23-7; reminding us all that we need to work harder and play smarter if we want to make it to the big championship.  It has always been our goal to make it to the Presidents’ cup and I think we now know what we will need to achieve as a team.
In the end, I think it’s all positive.
Until next time.
