Week 4 CUFLA Top 5 Power Rankings

There was not much action in CUFLA this Canadian Thanksgiving weekend as only four games took place. Two mid week match ups also took place on Wednesday and Thursday. With the minimal action, there was no changes in the week 4 CUFLA Top 5 Power Rankings.

1.Bishop’s 6-0-0 (Last Week 1)
The Bishop’s Gaiters had the weekend off for Canadian Thanksgiving and most likely ate some well deserved turkey as they are the only remaining undefeated squad in CUFLA. The defending Baggataway champions will return to action on Thursday taking on Concordia at Coulter Field. This will be the second match up between the two Quebec based clubs as the Gaiters skunked the Stingers 22-0. Bishop’s will host Trent on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Gaiter’s will hope to finish their week on 2-0 brining their overall win total to 8 and keep the goose egg in the loss column.

2. Western 6-1-0 (Last Week 2)
The Western Mustangs gain vengeance against the Guelph Gyphons who defeated them in a close 6-5 battle last Sunday(Sept 30). The Gryphs served the Stangs thier first loss of the year on their home turf on homecoming weekend. The rematch will be this Friday at 8 p.m. under the lights at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. The Mustangs will host the 2-4 Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday for a matinée at 1 p.m. If the Stantgs can pick up two wins, they will catch Guelphs point total of 16 and tie for first place in the West.
3.Brock (6-1-0) (Last Week 3)
The Brock Badgers picked up two home victories over the Laurentian Voyageurs this weekend. Saturday afternoon the Badgers came out to a 5-0 start over the Voyageurs in the first quarter. Laurentian’s Bob Pollock opened the scoring in the second quarter with a powerplay goal. The Badgers then answered Pollock’s goal with 6 unanswered goals. Voyaguer Phillip Romanet posted back to back extra man opportunity goals with within the last two minutes to make the score 11-3 in favour of the Badgers. Ex Canisus Golden Griffon and current Brock Badger Travis Gibbons netted two goals to kick off the second half and bring the Badgers up by 10. Each team exchanged goals including sophomore Mike Biergard’s second goal of the year. The third frame ended at a score of 16-6 for Brock. The fourth quarter had yet another Voyageur powerplay goal with freshman Jon Van Der G tallying his fourth goal of his rookie campaign. The Badgers closed out with two goals from senior captain Roscoe Smith and sophomore Gage Board. Goaltenders senior captain Ian Duffy and senior Dan Fyfe split the game with Duffy stopping 4 of his 7 shots faced in the first half while Fyfe shut the door 6 times on 10 attempts.
Senior Jordan Weedmark lead the way for the Badgers as he tallied a hat trick and three assists in the Badgers win. Freshman Brandon Staal added an impressive five helpers to bring his team leading assist total to 15.
The game on Sunday was a much different game as the Badgers only defeated the Voyageurs by 5 goals. Freshman Graeme McCollough earned the start but struggled stopping only 3 of 10 shots he faced. Senior Ian Duffy was called to relief the rookie goaltender and stopped 7 of 11 shots he faced in the victory. The sloppy play of the Badgers was bailed out by Duffy’s strong goaltending performance and a solid offensive effort. 10 different Badgers found the back of the cage including, 4 from Gibbons, 3 from sophomore Greg Davidson and 2 from Weedmark.
The Badgers continue to play undisciplined and give up an abundance of power play goals. If the Badgers can stay out of the box and play 6 on 6 ball, it is obvious they are an elite CUFLA team.
