With rosters smaller for the 2014 National Lacrosse League season, we have seen some surprising roster cuts as teams are looking to infuse energy into their lineup with new blood. However, some of the players released have been stars in their day and there is no doubt they will soon return to pro lacrosse action.
Gavin Prout has been a staple as an NLL scorer for his entire career, but he was not invited to Colorado Mammoth camp and they released him from their roster before the deadline to submit rosters. Now Prout is a free agent, free to go to any team who wants him.
According to Prout, he was told the Mammoth would not bring him back and team president Steve Govett said it was the toughest move he has ever had to make. With several teams weak on the right side of their offense, Prout still has a chance of clinging on to a team.
Meanwhile, Athan Iannucci was the other surprise to be released, with the Vancouver Stealth cutting him loose. The complaint with him has always been the offense needs to revolve around him, but the Stealth have too many weapons. It is unlikely the Philadelphia Wings bring him back, while the other eastern conference teams are set; will the Mammoth look at him to replace production from Casey Powell?
It will be interesting to watch where both these players end up, if they sign somewhere else at all.
