The Philadelphia Wings open the 2014 season with ten new faces . Evan Kirk (Goalie via trade), Ryan Ward, Tracey Kelusky, and Kyle Buchanan (free agents) lead the list of key additions to the team. The departure of the American players from last season, Rabil, Reynolds, Seibald, Kevin Buchanan to name a few take away some experience in the roster. Drew Westervelt was another key loss, but that landed a much needed goalie.
The Wings are hoping that the rookies play a major role. Garrett Thul who will be on the offense stands 6’4 and weighs 245 pounds. He is a big strong kid that has a cannon for a shot and an accurate one at that. Rookie defensemen John Ranagan and Mike Poppleton bring athletic ability, size and strength. Poppleton has been a beast on faceoffs during camp and the pre-season games. Ranagan adds speed to the defense to the point where they can push the ball up the floor quicker.
Returning veterans Brodie Merrill (captain), along with Kevin Ross(assistant), Kevin Crowley and Jordan Hall look to lead the offense as the Wings were the lowest scoring team last season. Brett Manney (assistant) looks to mold the young defense that has three rookies along with second year player Mike Manley.
This opening game is big for the Wings as three of their first five are on the road and all in the division.
