WLA Weekend Recap: Langley remains in first with win

With three games in the WLA this past weekend here are the results.

Langley Thunder (8) vs. Nanaimo Timbermen (6) Langley would open the scoring in this game as Shayne Jackson found the back of the net just four minutes into the first period in order to give Langley the 1-0 lead. Cody Bremner would take a penalty for Nanaimo which put the Thunder on the power play but they were not able to push their advantage as Doug Langois would catch them flat footed and score the shorthanded goal for Nanaimo to make it 1-1. Langley though still n the power play would respond as Mark Matthews scored to give the Thunder the 2-1 lead. The period would end with Langley leading 2-1.

In the second period Langley pressed their advantage as Athan Iannucci and Adam Jones scored to extend Langley’s lead to 4-1. Nanaimo would not be deterred as Myles Kenny would score and in order to pull the game to within two making it 4-2. Langley once again had the answer for Nanaimo as Nik Bilic scored to give Langley the 5-2 lead. Nanaimo would add one more goal at the end of the period to make the score 5-3. In the third period it was all Nanaimo as Cody Bremner and Chris O’Dougherty scored to tie this game 5-5. As the tird period ticked down neither team could beat the opposing goalie as Nick Rose and Zach Boychuk were on top of their game. As the third period ended the game was tied at 5-5 forcing overtime.

In the extra frame Atahan Iannucci was the Hero as he scored two goals just minutes apart to give Langley the 7-5 lead and control of this game. Paul Brebber would try to get his team back in this game with a goal but it was too late as Mitch McMichael scored right after for Langley which gave them the 8-6 victory.

Coquitlam Adanacs (7) vs. Maple Ridge Burrards (6)

Coquitlam has struggled all year but they got on the board early in this one as newly acquired Brett Hickey gave the Adanacs and early 1-0 lead. Riley Loewen would have the response foe Maple Ridge in order to tie this game 1-1. Jeff Zywicki would scored to give the Adanacs the 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. In the second period both tem were at a stale mate till about six minutes left in the period when Maple Ridge woke up and Aaron Davis, Garrett MacIntosh, and Curtis Dickson scored to give the Burrards the 4-2 lead heading into the third period.

In the third period Aaron Davis would score his second goal of the game to give the Burrards a 5-2 lead. Coquitlam though would get back in this game thanks to goals from Brandon Goodwin and Jeff Zywicki as they cut the Burrard’s lead to just one making it 5-4.  Curtis Dickson would have the response for Maple Ridge as he restored their two goal lead with a goal of his own making it 6-4. With ten mintues left to go Travis Cornwall would score to pull Coquitlam within one. With just under three minutes left in the period Brett Hickey would score to tie this game at 6-6. As the seconds ticked down on the clock this game appeared to be headed to overtime until Brett Hickey cored with two seconds left to give Coquitlam the 7-6 victory.

 

Nanaimo Timbermen (10) vs. Maple Ridge Burrards (9)

Both these teams were playing their second in game of a weekend back to back after both losing close games on Saturday both teams were motivated to get back in the win column. It would be all Nanaimo in the first period as they came out flying and scored five goals in the first while shutting out Maple Ridge to take a 5-0 lead at the end of the first.

Maple Ridge in the second period would be sparked by two Curtis Dickson goals which got their offense to roar back to life as Patrick O’Meara and Mike Mallory would score right after to cut the lead to one and make the score 5-4. Nanaimo though would extend their lead to end the second period as Myles Kenney, Jake Emms, and Cody Bremner  scored to give the Timbermen the 8-4 lead at the end of the second period.

In the third period Andrew Murphy scored an early goal for the Burrards to make the score 8-5. Nanimo would once again have the answer as Cody Bremner would score to restore the Timbermen’s four goal lead making the score 9-5. Maple Ridge was not done as Curtis Dickson rallied his team  as he sparked a four goal outburst from the Burrards picking up two goals and two assists in order to tie this game 9-9 at the end of the third period. In overtime both teams appeared to be evenly matched until Blake Kenney scored the game winner for Nanaimo and gave them the 10-9 win.
