Mammoth the Class of NLL In Early 2015

NLL season is just four weeks in and there is only one undefeated team left. The Colorado Mammoth lead the West Division with a 3-0 record after a convincing 20-9 win over the Vancouver Stealth.

The Stealth have struggled on defense, giving up an average of 18 goals per game in their past three. But that does not undermine the fact that Colorado has scored 20 goals in a game twice this season.

Calgary is without a win and Edmonton just took their first, meaning Colorado has a commanding lead in the west. And, arguably, they’ve had the least hype going into the year.

Vancouver wasn’t projected to be a champion like what was expected by Calgary and Edmonton, but after trading for Johnny Powless, they set high expectations for themselves.

Colorado didn’t make many preseason moves. Alex Turner and Eric Law were their only free agent signings on offense, and Law is yet to play in a game. Instead, Colorado has relied on an established core and their drafting to lead the league in scoring.

Adam Jones being back healthy has been a key, with him scoring a career high six assists in their win this week. Even Jackson Decker, making his season debut, picked up three assists. The Mammoth have found offense everywhere they’ve looked.

John Grant Jr. is arguabley the most prolific scorer in the modern NLL. Add him with former single season scoring record breaker Athan Iannucci, NLL veteran Sean Pollock, and high end scorer Drew Westervelt, and the league has a team to fear.
